When Moons and Rings Collide

This is absolutely astounding! The Cassini spacecraft captured a collision between Saturn's moon Prometheus and the F ring, which creates a "streamer;" material being pulled from the ring by the moon's gravity, leaving behind a dark channel. There's even a movie of the event! The creation of these streamers and channels occurs in a cycle that repeats during each of Prometheus' orbits. During its 14.7 hour orbit of Saturn, when Prometheus reaches apoapse, or where it is farthest away from Saturn and closest to the F ring, the oblong moon draws a streamer of material from the ring. But since Prometheus orbits faster than the material in the ring, this new streamer is pulled from a different location in the ring about 3.2 degrees (in longitude) ahead of the previous one.

Car crash art installation 'sick,' says British road safety charity

An art installation featuring a mangled car nestled against a tree has raised criticism from Brake, a British road safety charity. The installation is located outside Staffordshire University's Film Theatre as part of Stoke-on-Trent's Conjunc+ion 08 art festival and features the pre-recorded cries of injured passengers. A recording from the car's trunk continually repeats: "Help, help, come on guys, is anyone there? Can you hear me?" According to the U. K. Daily Mail, at least two passersby have attempted to break into the vehicle to rescue survivors. While the school defends the art, a spokesman said the audio track would be turned off during the night. "It has aroused interest among students, staff and passersby," he said. "However, as we don't wish to cause anyone alarm, we have taken steps to make sure the voice recording .

"Junk" DNA anything but, new study finds

The Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) reports that what was previously believed to be "junk" DNA is in fact a vital component that distinguishes humans from other species. Their research, published in Genome Research, notes that previously, more than 50 percent of human DNA was referred to as "junk" because it consisted of copies of nearly identical sequences. A major source of these repeats is internal viruses that have inserted themselves throughout the genome at various times during mammalian evolution.
