Putting a graphical spin on the notion of rendering the things which are Caesar’s, Google Earth has added a new 3D overlay depicting Rome as it existed in 320 A.D. The new layer, produced by the University of Virginia’s Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities based on its Rome Reborn model, lets users wander around, and sometimes inside, models of more than 6,700 buildings in the ancient city. Climb up and down the seven hills, stand in the center of the Colosseum, visit the virgins at the Temple of Vesta — it’s all possible now and a darn sight more compelling than the illustrations in dead-tree textbooks, which is why Google is also sponsoring a competition for educators to come up with the best Rome 3D curriculum. Tempus fugit, so don’t fiddle around.

Lunascape is a web browser capable of running any of the three major web rendering enginesGecko (Firefox), WebKit (Safari/Chrome), and Trident (Internet Explorer). That means that each time you open a new tab or follow a link, you can tell Lunascape which engine you want to use to render the page. The idea, in theory, is that Lunascape gives you the benefits of each popular browser in one. For example, Lunascape gives you IE support for the few IE-only sites still out there and no-nonsense speed from WebKit or Gecko.

Da Massive writes "'Why is IE still relevant and why is it worth spending money on rendering engines when there are open source ones available that can respond to changes in Web standards faster?,' asked a young developer to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in Sydney yesterday. 'That's cheeky, but a good question, but cheeky,' Ballmer said. Then came the startling revelation that Microsoft may also adopt an open source browser engine. 'Open source is interesting,' he said. 'Apple has embraced Webkit and we may look at that, but we will continue to build extensions for IE 8.'"

A security researcher told eWeek about a new Web attack vector that could evade current anti-virus detection technology, rendering them obsolete. Dubbed ‘Script Fragmentation,’ it basically breaks down current exploits into smaller pieces and delivers them synchronously to the victim’s machine to be reassembled once triggered. Pretty ingenious.
