Travel-Blogue Day 10: Church

I’m a religious omnivore, with interest in Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, and Voodoo. (My true religion, the one I really believe in, is Progressivism, which I define as living life in a way that improves the lives of humans and safeguards the environment. Ergo, politically, I’m a Democrat.) So when I travel I often stop in at the local place of worship. In this case, this Sunday morning, it’s the Sree Venkateshwara Temple on small but steep hill in the middle of Hyderabad. It’s just a kilometer from my hotel.

Cooking Stimulated Big Leap In Human Cognition

Hugh Pickens writes "For a long time, humans were pretty dumb, doing little but make 'the same very boring stone tools for almost 2 million years,' says Philipp Khaitovich of the Partner Institute for Computational Biology in Shanghai. Then, 150,000 years ago, our big brains suddenly got smart. We started innovating. We tried different materials. We started creating art and maybe even religion. To understand what caused the cognitive spurt, researchers examined chemical brain processes known to have changed in the past 200,000 years. Comparing apes and humans, they found the most robust differences were for processes involved in energy metabolism. The finding suggests that increased access to calories spurred our cognitive advances, although definitive claims of causation are premature.

Iran considering banning filthy bloggers from meatspace

Blogging about the wrong topics in Iran won't just get you censored; it could get you killed. Iran's parliament voted last week to discuss a draft bill that would "toughen punishment" for a number of crimes that it believes to be detrimental to society by making them subject to the death penalty. This list already includes crimes like armed robbery, rape, and leaving the religion of Islam (apostasy), but running a blog or website that promotes corruption, prostitution, or apostasy may soon be added.

Miami-Dade Police Handbook to Address Animal Sacrifices

MIAMI (AP) -- Miami-Dade police officials plan to include in their 2009 handbook a note about how to respond to calls about ritual animal sacrifices. The decision comes a year after Coral Gables officers raided a home where practitioners of Santeria were slaughtering goats, chickens and pigeons. Several worshippers were held at gunpoint and detained for hours. The entry will remind county officers that federal and state laws protect people's freedom to practice religion.

Polynesian Art Exhibited in Paris

Image "Art and Divinity in Polynesia, 1760 -1860" now at the Quai Branly Museum is the largest exhibition from major European sources to be presented on the theme of Polynesian art. Divine or sacred works are a major theme in the show. The notion of something sacred being set apart as "kapu" or taboo continues to influence Polynesians today. The concept of taboo, was introduced into the English language through Captain Cook's journals, and has slowly taken on a western meaning over the years. First used in early studies of comparative religion, "taboo" was later adopted by Freud and other psychoanalysts, and came to suggest something forbidden. The original Polynesian meaning concerned with protecting others from the strong force or "mana" by setting apart or containing this power, has been lost in translation.

Ragnar Tornquist On Video Game Storytelling

Ragnar Tornquist is respected as one of the best storytellers in today's game industry. He's done work on Anarchy: Online, Dreamfall, and upcoming MMO The Secret World. Rock, Paper, Shotgun has a lengthy three-part interview with Tornquist about how good stories are crafted, how they interact with other aspects of the games, and what his preferences are for building a compelling character. "We had all these characters who were on a journey of faith, and we said how can we ensure that this theme is carried through, and have a clear view of how their journeys happen. So we said, every single major character had to fit into this model. Everybody starts out at the top. Faith can be anything — it can be religion, it can be a belief in yourself, in your abilities, in the work you do.

We are not alone - NASA astronaut

I am totally with you Jeda of Melbourne... To think that we human on Earth are the only one in this universe is a total arrogance that is beyond comprehension. We, along with all things exists are made out of the same particles that made up the rest of the Universe. Instead of welcoming the findings and entertaining the possibilities, the ruling governments allow fear to set in and squashed all evidence. We need to change it to the perspective of love... not fear. Perhaps and just perhaps that if we collectively realized that we do indeed share the airspace with other civilizations it might give us a better incentive to unite as one to move our consciousness to a new height. And we might start to treat our own kind a little bit more humanely without the differentiations of country, race and religion.
