Blog Buzz: Ad Wars, John McCain Wants to Fire SEC Chair, Todd Palin Ignores Subpoena

Recent ads released by Barack Obama and John McCain have set off an ad war between the candidates. McCain has released two ads tying Barack Obama to former Fannie Mae CEOs Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson. The Obama campaign says an E-mail proves that Raines is not an adviser, but the McCain campaign points to recent stories in the Washington Post to support its assertion. Conservative bloggers aren't happy about a Time blogger who says that McCain is playing the race card with the Raines ad (Raines is African-American) because of images in the ad and the omission of Obama's tie to Johnson, who is white. They point out that McCain has since released an ad about Johnson. For their part, the Obama campaign has released a Spanish-language ad, "Dos Caras," attacking McCain on immigration and linking the candidate to Rush Limbaugh.

Fixes Released (and More Promised) For "Clickjacking" Exploits

An anonymous reader writes "As discussed previously on Slashdot, concern has been raised over a class of 'clickjacking' vulnerabilities which affect all major Web browsers. These exploits allow an attacker to place invisible or seemingly legit objects on a Web page that perform undesired actions when a user clicks on them. In recent developments, 'Guya' posted a scary proof-of-concept that hijacks Adobe Flash Player to spy on users with a webcam and/or microphone. In response, Adobe released an advisory with a temporary workaround, and stated that a future Player update will address the exploit. This prompted the original disclosers of the vulnerabilities to post a summary of the exploits. Additionally, Giorgio Maone, creator of the popular NoScript extension for Firefox and other Gecko-based browsers, released version 1.

Scientific Linux 4.7 Released

Scientific Linux 4.7, based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 7, was released last night with major improvements and package updates. "Scientific Linux 4.7 has been released. We want to thank all those who have contributed packages and time, helping us build and test this release. Scientific Linux 4.7 doesn't have any exciting new features, it is just a nice, stable release. It also [includes] all errata and bugfixes up until September 03, 2008." - said the Scientific Linux team in the official release announcement.

FSF-Sponsored GNewSense 2.1 Released

An anonymous reader writes "gNewSense, the fully-free GNU/Linux distribution sponsored by the FSF, has released a 2.1 live CD (torrent). Since the last release, more non-free binary blobs have been removed, new artwork has been added and lots of other improvements have been made. It's also two years since the first edition of gNewSense, and in that time an impressive ten live CDs have been released! gNewSense 2.1 DeltaH is based on Ubuntu Hardy, and removes non-free software that other distributions don't." I wonder if gNewSense can be easily installed on an OLPC XO the way several other distros can.

Dirac 1.0.0 Released

Now a stable version of the dirac-research codebase, Dirac 1.0.0, has been released. The latest version of VLC (the recently released 0.9.2) has support for Dirac using the Schroedinger library."
