OCLC and the information schools of Syracuse University and the University of Washington have announced aReference Extractn “effort to explore the creation of a more credible Web search experience” based on librarian input—an effort that might fill a need but also raises questions about timing and scalability. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is currently the blue-eyed boy of Indian cricket. The World Twenty20 win last year, the eye-popping IPL salary, the victory against world-beating Australia in the recent Test series - it seems he can do no wrong. So when he was asked by the Ranchi District Arms Magistrate to produce a character certificate before he could get a gun licence, a section of his fans were outraged. "A great son of India has been insulted by this demand for a character reference," they said and effigies of the local magistrate were burnt during a demonstration demanding that the licence be issued immediately. Their efforts didn't go in vain; the Ranchi district administration withdrew their request, saying a person of Dhoni's stature needed no reference.

Do your patrons ever ask you why only a portion of the text from an ebook may be copied and printed? Do students want to know why certain databases can be accessed in the library but not remotely? Is a library user surprised to find that 30 copies of a musical score cannot be photocopied for distribution without obtaining permission from the publisher? Because U.S. copyright law is complex and murky, questions about copyright present a challenge to librarians both in interpretation and in application.

Plenty of video games have the ability to create user-modification and user-made levels. Back in the 80s and 90s, this was made popular with games like Castle Wolfenstein and Doom. Many of these user-made versions involve famous characters. In fact, one of the first such cases was when some high school kids remixed the original Castle Wolfenstein to create Castle Smurfenstein, replacing all the Nazis in the original game with smurfs. In Matt Mason's book The Pirate's Dilemma, he talks about how these early mods helped shape and grow the video game industry.

MTV this week put nearly every single music video they've ever aired online, which is a nice trip down memory lane for those of us who grew up with MTV. Interestingly though, Techdirt notes how the channel censored out the names of popular file sharing sites from a Weird Al Yankovic video. While the music industry has been inadvertently advertising these services for years via a very public legal assault, allowing them to be named in a music video crosses the line? Unless the move was either a joke or publicity stunt?
