When 28-year-old Anmar Abdulla received a threatening letter with a bullet in it, he knew it was time to leave his home country of Iraq. He closed up the translation bureau he was running and received an even greater threat a few days later, when a car bomb went off outside the bureau and demolished the building. Like millions before him, Abdulla relocated to Damascus, Syria, where he was jobless and lived on savings that only lasted a few months. His parents remained in Baghdad, but he couldn't contact them out of fear. His fate was uncertain, his anxiety ever-increasing.

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has started sending out a patch for its Android operating system to fix a security problem with the browser, and addressed a few other minor changes, CNet reports. The patch is going out on various days, with CNet reporting that they received notification on Saturday. I received the patch for my T-Mobile G1 on Sunday. The update went smoothly. A short message appeared saying an update was available, and then I had the choice of updating now or later. I clicked now, and it happened over a matter of minutes, and then the phone worked normally. The patch comes only about a week after a couple of researchers revealed the flaw on Oct. 24, showing that Google is being responsive to concerns.

A report on smartphone satisfaction ranked Apple’s iPhone as having the highest customer satisfaction. Released today by J.D. Power and Associates, the report measured five factors when it came to customer satisfaction, ranging from ease-of-use to battery life. On a 1,000-point scale, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) received 778 points; Blackberry receive 703 points and Samsung received 701 points. Although satisfaction ranked high, the study still said one-fourth of users report having to reboot the device when it freezes and issues related to touch screen problems. Rather than thinking this is a runaway victory for Apple, it’s worth pointing out that they are all grouped together at a fairly comparable level that leaves plenty of room for improvement.

dslrs and hd videoIt was a fairly innocuous start. A hastily assembled, last-minute project conceived and shot in 14 straight hours, edited together in three hours (no time for color correction) and a quick posting to a blog with the link to the completed five-minute short. This was as close as you could get to a straight line from the camera to the web. No hype machine, no PR company creating fake YouTube entries to generate buzz—just a simple blog entry and a video clip. And then it happened. A few people read the blog, watched the video and forwarded it to friends, who watched and forwarded. Within eight hours it had garnered more than 250,000 views, only through word of mouth. I received more than a dozen e-mails that day saying, “You gotta watch this!” The video now has received upward of two million views and growing.
