Pietersen pinpoints reasons for ODI loss to India INDORE: England captain Kevin Pietersen blamed a lack of killer instinct in his bowlers and the failure of any of his batsmen to post a big score for the 54-run loss to India on Monday to trail 2-0 in the seven-match, one-day international series.

The Web Thrived In Spite Of The DMCA, Not Because Of It

While I was pointing out all of the reasons why the DMCA needs to be re-examined from scratch, Wired has put up an article detailing the one single positive aspect of the DMCA: the safe harbor provisions that protect service providers from liability for copyright infringement done by users. However, I think Wired, and the various people quoted in the article, give way too much credit to the DMCA for a variety of reasons. In fact, Wired goes way too far in claiming that the DMCA "saved" the web and allowed it to become what it is today, suggesting (incorrectly) that things like blogs and YouTube wouldn't be successes without the DMCA.

Big Freddie Mac attack: Best of the Boards/Blogs

We have all seen our investments plummet these last few months. Hedge funds liquidation is one of the reasons. The psychological fear is also one of the reasons driving prices down. And not just stock prices, but most commodity prices. This is the main reason that I am optimistic about what is to come. Even though oil consumption is down, the developing world's oil consumption keeps rising. The large oil companies are not replacing their depleting reserves. The major oil companies are buying back shares, like SVM is doing, instead of putting that

Anonymous Anger Rampant On the Web

the4thdimension writes "In a story that may bring out the "duh" in you, CNN is a story about how anonymous anger is rampant on the Internet. Citing various reasons, it attempts to explain why sites like MyBiggestComplaint and Just Rage exist and why anger via the web seems to be everywhere. Various reasons include: anonymity, lack of rules, and lack of immediate consequences. Whatever the reason, they describe that online anger has resulted in real-life violence and suggest methods for parents and teens to cope with e-aggression and to learn to be aware of it." I can't figure out what makes me angrier: my habit of anonymously trolling web forums, or my video game playing.

Bash One-Liner Script To Produce Somewhat-Fancy Output Of Who's On Your Linux Or Unix Box

Today we're going to shoot out a quick one liner script that can come in handy from time to time. It doesn't fall under the "necessary" category (or, maybe not even the "useful" one ;), but it's nice to have for those times when you just don't feel like doing any extra typing or expending the effort required to separate the wheat from the chaff on a screen full of garbage output. That is, as I've always understood, one of the main reasons to script things out in the first place. The other reasons, like automation, efficiency, etc, are pretty much ignored here, even though we will be automating a repetitive action and that, by definition, will make our waste of company time more efficient. No matter how you look at them, automation and efficiency always seem to be a good thing ;)

Could You Google Bomb Google Flu?

Google got a lot of attention recently for the launch of Google Flu Trends, which looks at aggregate data on searches related to the flu, to see if it can act as something of an early warning system for where there are flu problems. It's an interesting use of the data, and it will be worth watching what else can be done with this sort of data over time. However, Ed Felten raises an interesting question: can Google Flu Trends be manipulated? The idea is that, right now, it may be accurate, but the very fact that people know Google is tracking this information, could create incentives to game that info -- in the same way people have tried gaming Google in other ways for years, using tricks such as Google bombing. While you might not think there would be that many reasons to manipulate Google Flu Trends, there could be reasons to do so.
