Implementing Windows Server 2008's Read-Only Domain Controller

One of the most touted features of Windows Server 2008 is the Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC). The RODC is a domain controller deployed after a traditional domain controller that contains the schema, configuration, domain, application directory partitions, and partial attribute set schemas of an Active Directory database in a read-only fashion.

Moving on, fixing up, and the fight for Narnia.mobi

Sometimes you read something and think "That's a crazy idea. I can't believe it worked." Sometimes you read something and think "That's a great idea. I hope it works." And sometimes you read something and think "How is that going to work?" Well this week we have submissions in each category -- and one that doesn't fit the pattern.

PR Guy Says Bloggers Should Shut Up And Take Press Releases

When we first started Techdirt, one of the things I said clearly on the site was not to send us press releases, as we had no interest in writing about them. Yet, so many PR people clearly chose not to read the site and they send them anyway. They don't read the fact that we don't want press releases -- and in most cases they clearly don't read the site because the press releases obviously are about stuff we never write about. And it just gets worse and worse. These days, my inbox is filled with more press releases than regular email -- and I don't post any of them. You would think that PR people would eventually recognize how inefficient it is to send these press releases -- but since it's so easy to just cc every email address in a press list, they never even think about it.

Read draws the fire from Cork's wild celebrations

Chris Read defused an incendiary burst of three wickets in four balls from Dominic Cork to ensure that a potentially fascinating final day was gently laid to rest in the evening sunshine. Cork's preposterous celebrations when he bowled Samit Patel to reduce Nottinghamshire to 46 for three and give himself the chance of a second Old Trafford hat-trick confirmed that Lancashire could sniff a second championship win of the season.

Wii Homebrew Can Now Read Burned DVDs, Play PSP Games?

Couple of news tidbits from the shadowy Wii homebrew scene today. First is what is supposedly the first custom Wii firmware that its author, Waninkoko, claims will allow the Wii to read burned DVDs without any hardware modification. And from the "just for the hell of it" department is a separate announcement of a PSP emulator running successfully on the Wii—albeit at a blazingly unplayable four to eight frames per second. The PSP emulator smells a bit more of fish than the DVD-R enabling firmware, but neither have been tested officially. [Waninkoko, DCEmu via Slashdot]
