The last release candidate of Ubuntu 8.10, code named "Intrepid Ibex", is now available. This version is expected to be stable, but it is still considered a test version. The release of the official version is scheduled for October 30th. More information and download instructions can be found here.

Sony's Rolly MP3 'Bot Gets To Do RC Bluetooth Jives With Your Cellphone

Sony's Rolly is such a strange beast it either confuses, bemuses or amuses you...and now there's a new version with Bluetooth remote control mode. So you can now steer around your confusing, bemusing, amusing little robot MP3 dancer—in fact you can control up to seven of the SEP-50BTs, from a cellphone or laptop. Still, there's now a pink version too, and its price hasn't moved. It's still around $400, and its out November 21 in Japan. [RobotWatch]

openSUSE Kills EULA

Just in time for openSUSE 11.1 RC 1, we’ve finished the new and improved license for openSUSE 11.1. The days of agreeing to a EULA for openSUSE are over!

KDE 4.1 Review

The release Thursday of OpenSUSE 11.1 RC 'incited' me to download the KDE-based Open CD version and give it a spin. I've been tracking KDE 4.1 across three distributions (Mandriva 2009, Fedora 10, and OpenSUSE). I tried Kubuntu 8.10 and immediately rebooted my system and threw the CD in the trash. Kubuntu in any version is one of the worst ways to experience KDE (version 3 or version 4).

Google moves quickly to plug Android security hole

Earlier this week a security hole was discovered in Android 1.0 (TC4-RC-29) that allowed you to gain root access to the device. The trick was that you have to start up a telnetd server on the phone, and then anyone who knows your IP address can log into the machine without a password to an administrator account.

Low Cost Robot On Wheels Can Spy Baddies, Paint Them to Death

ROMP—or Remotely Operated Mobile Platform—is a poor man's version of an iRobot battlefield bot. Instead of fancy tracks and miniaturized sensors, these ROMPs seem more like sophisticated all-terrain RC cars rigged with consumer cameras. Until you meet the older brother, of course, the weaponized WROMP with its big gun on top. In the words of its creator, Chris Rogers:

Download a Taste of Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 Ahead of Firefox 3.1 Beta 2

With Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 still cooking, Mozilla is offering for download the first taste of Firefox 3.1 Beta 3. Just as Microsoft is working its way up to Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate, so is Mozilla laboring to produce the first RC Build of its open-source browser. And, when it comes down to Firefox 3.1 codename Shiretoko, a couple of Betas are standing between the browser and the Release Candidate stage, namely Beta 2 and Beta 3.

First Release Candidate of Linux Mint 6 Is Out

Clement Lefebvre and the Linux Mint community proudly announced last night, on the official Linux Mint Blog, the first release candidate of Linux Mint 6 (dubbed Felicia), which will be followed by a second one in about two weeks. However, if everything goes well with the testing of this first development release, they will prepare a stable version of Linux Mint 6, instead of a second RC. And, as promised, the x64 edition will be released shortly after the launch of the x86 edition.
