Scientists with the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology in Gent, Belgium, have determined what makes plants either "annual," meaning they live one growing season and die, or "perennial," meaning they regrow every spring. The difference, according to work done by scientist Siegbert Melzer, comes down to two critical flower-inducing genes that, when turned off, can turn an annual into a perennial. The rapid growth of flowers, and then seeds, is the strategy most annuals use to propagate from one generation to the next and one growing season to the next. Annuals experience "rapid growth following germination and rapid transition to flower and seed formation, thus preventing the loss of energy needed to create permanent structures," said a statement about the research from the institute.

Abbott has filed a lawsuit against Medtronic for infringing on its patent for the Rapid Exchange system. The lawsuit comes on the heels of Medtronic’s announcement that it is launching its Endeavor drug-eluting stent and other angioplasty products in the U.S. on the Rapid Exchange delivery system, which it anticipates will increase use of its devices, Medtronic says. Abbott says its Xience V drug-eluting stent has rapidly become the U.S. market leader. It does not expect Medtronic’s launch of a new delivery system to change market dynamics.

The study of microbial communities from environmental samples, known as metagenomics, has been propelled forward by technological advancements in high-throughput, low-cost sequencing such as 454’s Genome Sequencer FLX System. With the recent use of sequencing approaches for metagenomic analysis, the major research challenges have shifted from generating to analyzing data. To resolve these analysis bottlenecks, a team of researchers from Argonne National Laboratory, The University of Chicago, and San Diego State University have developed an open source system for automated processing of metagenomic sequence data. The resource, designed specifically for data files generated by the 454 Sequencing platform, generates phylogenetic and functional summaries of the genomes by comparing the sequence against protein and nucleotide databases.
