During his Quakecon keynote, id Software's John Carmack revealed that Rage will look worse on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console due to compression. Interestingly enough, it isn't a graphics limitation id is running into, instead they're limited to the amount of content they can fit on two DVDs. Carmack stated that adding a third disc to the game wouldn't be feasible due to added licensing expenses.

John Carmack revealed at last night's QuakeCon keynote that Rage will look worse on Xbox 360, reports Shacknews. He stated that the reason for this is that the compression techniques necessary to fit the games onto two discs would degrade the visuals; it's not a matter of processor power. According to Carmack, including a third disc for the the Xbox 360 would be unfeasible because of royalty fees and he hopes Microsoft will make a concession.

At last year's QuakeCon, id Software gave GameSpy a first good look at its latest major title, Rage. Using the new id Tech 5 engine, the game was presented with a setting of a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and gameplay that would be part first-person shooter and part vehicular combat. We haven't seen much since then, however, including this year's QuakeCon, where id showed off a new two-minute trailer but nothing more. So to dig a little deeper, we cornered id Software creative director Tim Willits, who offered some insight into the game's setting and backstory.

John Carmack, the president and technical director of id Software, said in an interview that the forthcoming Rage title from the studio mostly known for Doom and Quake series would not look exceptionally good on Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console since the developers will need to use advanced compression methods to fit the game on two dual-layer DVDs. Unfortunately, Mr. Carmack did not reveal when the game is set to become available.

TGR - "Those expecting any bombshell announcements from this year's QuakeCon keynote may have to wait for another time. While id CEO Todd Hollenshead did officially announce the next Doom game, job postings for the title had already surfaced on the internet, leaking the news far in advance, mitigating much of the impact of the announcement. Nothing more than a teaser image was released regarding the title, and audience reception seemed cautious, calling for "flashlight tape" and hoping for a more robust multiplayer experience."
