The shift from SGML to XML has created new demands for managing structured documents. Many XML documents will be transient representations for the purpose of data exchange between different types of applications, but there will also be a need for effective means to manage persistent XML data as a database. This paper explores requirements for an XML database management system. The purpose of the paper is not to suggest a single type of system covering all necessary features. Instead the purpose is to initiate discussion of the requirements arising from document collections, to offer a context in which to evaluate current and future solutions, and to encourage the development of proper models and systems for XML database management.

An anonymous reader writes "I am a biomedical researcher interested in having general-purpose, scientific programs developed and released as open source. Interface design and reusability of the code are of primary importance to me. For my purpose, Cocoa applications relying on Core Data seem to be the best way to get the job done quickly. While I have some programming experience, I have few connections to the industrial world. So my question to Slashdot readers is: how do I find someone (individual or business) to write high-quality programs? Are there reputable contractors experienced in Cocoa? What sort of rates should I expect, to use as a starting point in negotiations? Would a requirement that programs are released as open source make it more or less difficult to find someone to do the job?"

The purpose of copyright is clear: it's to provide an incentive for the creation of new content. As such, it makes absolutely no sense to ever retroactively extend any sort of copyright. The government, backed by citizens, made a deal with content creators: you create content and we give you a monopoly for x number of years -- and clearly that deal was considered fair by the content creators, or they wouldn't have agreed to it and created the content. To go back and change the terms of the deal at a later date is unfair to everyone. It's renegotiating a deal against citizens' best interests. It's as if you bought a car for a price you negotiated, and three years later, the car company comes back to you and says that you need to pay more, because they, alone, decided that they didn't make enough off of you.

The primary purpose of email in an organization is to relay important information to employees, stakeholders, and associates of the institution. Many institutions do classify how and in what capacity their computer systems are to be used. My employer, NC State University, uses the institution’s website as a means of communicating the acceptable use of email and computers while in the workplace. The website is meant to provide easy access to information should anyone feel uncertain about online activity. One can find all of the rules of conduct within the Computer and Network Use Regulations page. While some companies are stricter than others, it is sometimes acceptable to use workplace email accounts as a means of personal communication. However, because the same accounts are being used to transfer critical information such as documents

Rohde & Schwarz is presenting two all-purpose instruments for mobile spectrum analysis: the R&S FSH4 and the R&S FSH8. Both analyzers are rugged, handy and lightweight. They also come equipped with a powerful battery pack. The R&S FSH4 and R&S FSH8 cover the frequency range from 9kHz to 3.6GHz or 8GHz. Depending on the options installed, they can also be used as two-port vector network analyzers, as cable and antenna testers or as power meters. This means that they support almost all RF measurement tasks encountered in service, installation and maintenance applications.
