A NEW age calls for new rules. There have been several cases in the last few years of internet fraud in which credit cards and ATMs have been misused, confidential information robbed electronically, and the happily democratic and largely unpoliced medium of the worldwide web exploited to disseminate messages of hate and terror. No doubt there has to be a check on such flagrant abuse of the internet and the many services that an increasingly large number of people are availing electronically. But while we welcome the government’s decision to crack down on cyber crime, this paper reiterates its stance that the death penalty should have no place on the statute books. A human being has no right to take another person’s life, irrespective of the barbarity of the crime committed.

With four tech titans -- Amazon, EMC, Microsoft, and Sun -- hitting their 52-week lows on Thursday, Oct. 23, and a bunch of others coming awfully close, I wondered in my last post if we should have called it Tech Black Thursday. In fairness, I didn't bother to do the same scan on some of Wall Street's other recent and horrific days. So, Thursday may not have been unique. But, at least in the case of Amazon, one has to wonder if Wall Street has it right.

SYDNEY (Agencies): Cricket Australia (CA) has suggested a more stringent system of punishment for slow over-rates and the authorities are likely to discuss the issue which might include penalties like docking of championship or rankings points. CA chief executive James Sutherland said the game lacked the necessary sanctions to prevent teams falling behind in their allocated overs, like the scenario in Nagpur last week when Ricky Ponting's side blew a golden opportunity to save the series by bowling part-timers in order to make up a nine-over shortfall. ''Umpires certainly have that responsibility out on the ground, but they have a responsibility to communicate (about slow over rates). They don't necessarily have a remedy or a stick in their hand to deal with that,'' Sutherland was quoted as saying by The Age today.

November 10, 2008 - Trying to come up with just about any ranked list of games for the PlayStation 2 when it's enjoyed such ridiculous success has to pass for cruel and unusual punishment. It's not so much that we couldn't come up with 25 games -- that much was cake -- it was having to plug them into the ranking. As with all lists of this nature, it's going to come down to personal preference. Sports gamers, for instance, are obviously going to throw quite a few more of their favorites on the list. Likewise, RPG nuts have been uncommonly blessed with some wonderful examples of the genre.

The German finance minister Peer Steinbrück says quite a few leading private banks intend to take apply for assistance under Berlin's 500 billion euro financial bail-out package. German media reports that the banks are planning coordinated action to avoid individual institutions being singled out for punishment on the stock market. Hypo Real Estate is the first private bank to apply for aid under that program. The German government is also working on a rescue package for businesses to follow its bank bailout scheme. It foresees among other things, amendments to car taxes to help the automobile sector, which has suffered recent heavy losses. Berlin says one German job in six depends on the car industry.

The blogger who uploaded the latest Guns N' Roses album, Chinese Democracy, and who was then arrested has apparently agreed to a plea bargain in the case. Prosecutors had already dropped the charges from a felony to a misdemeanor, and the plea deal probably means he'll get off without too much punishment -- but the whole thing still seems fairly ridiculous. It's not at all clear why the FBI wasted taxpayer money chasing down a fan who simply helped promote the music. In the end, it seems like GNR basically got tax-payer funded promotion for its latest album, while causing significant stress in the life of the guy who was in the middle of all of this. What a joke.

BRISBANE: At the end of the first Test Ricky Ponting felt Australia did "a pretty good job" of staying in touch with the over-rate, but the team has been fined for the second game in a row by the match referee Chris Broad. Ponting was docked 30% of his match fee of A$12,750, double the punishment of his team-mates, for being three behind during the 149-run victory over New Zealand that ended on the fourth morning.

High-powered Hollywood lawyer Terry Christensen has learned the price of conspiring with shady private eye Anthony Pellicano. Christensen was sentenced Monday in L.A. to three years in prison for plotting to wiretap the calls of Lisa Bonder, ex-wife of MGM billionaire Kirk Kerkorian. U.S. District Judge Dale Fischer, who also ordered Christensen to pay a $250,000 fine, snarled at the disgraced lawyer's bid to serve his time in his mansion: "Home detention in an 8,000-square-foot home is not punishment. ... In [Mr. Christensen's] mind, everyone must follow the rules except him. ... Just like any criminal, Mr. Christensen did not expect to be caught. Sadly, this is how he's likely to be remembered."
