Mac clone manufacturer Psystar, which has been sued by Apple for copyright violation, isn't putting all its eggs in the Mac OS market. The Miami-based system integrator has introduced a Linux-based personal computer that sells for just $299. Psystar's OpenLite system ships with the Ubuntu Linux desktop preinstalled, running on a 1.8-GHz Intel Celeron chip with integrated graphics support. Upgrading to a dual-core Pentium chip costs an additional $40. "With unparalleled affordability, this computer can bring Windows computing into every home and office," Psystar boasts on its Web site, even though the system runs Linux, not Microsoft Windows.

Ian Lamont writes "Buried in the court filings of the recently concluded Psytar antitrust suit against Apple is a document that discussed Apple's corporate policy regarding employee email. Apparently, Apple has no company-wide policy for archiving, saving, or deleting email. This could potentially run afoul of e-discovery requirements, which have tripped up other companies that have been unable to produce emails and other electronic files in court. A lawyer quoted in the article (but not involved in the case) called Apple's retention policy 'negligent.' However, the issue did not help Psystar's lawsuit against Apple — a judge dismissed the case earlier this week."

Hackintosh maker Psystar's legal defenses system -- basically, its claim that Apple is a monopoly -- has failed in court. All that's apparently left now is for Apple to go in for the kill. Outside the courtroom this week, Apple TV got a bump with a new firmware update, and in iTunes news, it appears as though the online music store is still trying to get the record labels to let it dump DRM.

Apple has stepped-up its lawsuit against Psystar, adding claims of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) violations, according to Computerworld. The clone-maker is accused of reverse engineering the piracy protection methods employed in Mac OS X. "Defendant has illegally circumvented Apple's technological copyright-protection measures," the amended complaint states. The change comes five months after the initial filings, as the company has "discovered new information."

Apple is victorious in a trademark suit! No, not against Psystar, but against a company in China that used an apple logo strikingly similar to the US computer- and gadget-maker's. Apple operates business in China, so it's not surprising that it ran into conflicts with another company trying to use an Apple logo. The New Apple Concept Digital Technology Co Ltd has now been ordered by the People's Court in Shenyang to pay 400,000 yuan (roughly US$58,000) to Apple, Inc. in damages, as reported by China's state-run news agency Xinhua.
