Sony Opens PS2 Platform

Ars Technica reports that Sony will be removing their content approval process for the Playstation 2 so that developers require less funding to make games. "Since there are no licensing fees, the only cost to the developer would be the PS2 dev kit. In order to help alleviate some of that financial burden, Bain said that in some cases Sony will lend out dev kits. Another option for developers making small, casual titles is to purchase PS2 debug dev kits, which cost about 1/10 of a full version. Bain went on to explain another possible option for smaller local developers: the PlayStation Network. 'One thing that a lot of developers seem to forget is that PlayStation Network is free,' he explained. 'Consumers do not have to pay a monthly fee...

PS2 is now an open-platform

Here's something quite intriguing from last week – just in case you missed it. SCEE has ceased the approvals process for PS2 games in Europe, effectively making the machine an open platform for software developers. The announcement was made by developer relations manager George Bain at the Casual Connect conference in Kiev. It seems Sony is mainly targeting regional developers in countries like India and Russia which will now be able to make, "low-development cost titles and release them in their market".

King of Fighters: Orochi Decks PS2, PSP, Winding Up for the Wii (and not the 360)

Well, we've got another compilation pack that I'm looking forward to from SNK. This time, it's chock full of classic KOF games, collecting KOFs 95-97, which clocked PS2s and PSPs upside the head, and is coming soon to the Nintendo Wii, at the great price of $20 (for the PS2) or $30 (for the Wii and PSP). Regrettably, it's not coming to the PS3 or the Xbox 360...so no online play.

Today we are checking out the Gene Simmons Axe Game Controller for the PS3 and PS2 console. The controller works with both Rock Band and Guitar hero games. Okami not a complete failure on Wii

Even though Okami is considered many to be one of the better games on the PS2, the title was considered to be a failure as far as sales go. In spite of the poor sales, Capcom decided to give the title new life on Wii. Most believed that the same situation with sales on the PS2 would happen again on the Wii, but the latest sales figures from Capcom might indicate otherwise...

PlayStation 2 Goes Open Platform

Designing a game for consoles is much tougher than PCs, if only for the costly certification testing process that can be daunting to development studios who are accustomed to grabbing extra ketchup packets at lunch just to make soup for dinner. But Sony Europe has completely removed the PS2 certification process in their region, effectively making the PS2 an open platform in much of the world. With 131.3 million PS2s sold worldwide, that's gotta be awfully exciting to at least a few startup studios. As for you, expect the deluge of shovelware from Russia and India any day now. PS2 becomes open platform

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have effectively opened-up the PlayStation 2 platform in certain parts of the world, developer relations boss George Bain telling a conference of eastern European game makers that approval is no longer necessary for new releases.

Top 25 PS2 Games: Day 1

November 10, 2008 - Trying to come up with just about any ranked list of games for the PlayStation 2 when it's enjoyed such ridiculous success has to pass for cruel and unusual punishment. It's not so much that we couldn't come up with 25 games -- that much was cake -- it was having to plug them into the ranking. As with all lists of this nature, it's going to come down to personal preference. Sports gamers, for instance, are obviously going to throw quite a few more of their favorites on the list. Likewise, RPG nuts have been uncommonly blessed with some wonderful examples of the genre.

Sega Japan Passing On PS2 Sonic Unleashed

In North America and Europe Sonic Unleashed is exploding on every viable console on the market with a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 2 version that Japan isn't getting. Sega of Japan plans to release Sonic: World Adventure (renamed to better fit Sonic's journey around the Earth and downplay the Werehog thing?) only on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. The PlayStation 2 port will be completed before Sonic: World Adventure launches in Japan so this begs the question why is Sega passing on it? It's not like Sega Japan is abandoning the PlayStation 2 entirely. Thunderforce VI comes out on Thursday in Japan and unless Sega has anything secretly planned it will be the final PlayStation 2 game published by Sega in the region.

Crash Bandicoot Mind Over Mutant PS2

In the latest Bandicoot adventure we see him up against his arch nemesis Neo Cortex, who's devised yet another fiendish, and dastardly devilish, evil scientist plan to take over the world. This time he's using basically a brain control device to turn the denizens of Wampu island into his unwitting pawns, and of course they fall for it through Neo's clever use of infomercials. So it's up to our friendly neighborhood bandicoot to come save the day once again, this time though he's got some special tricks up his sleeve, or should I say in his pockets. Crash has the ability to 'jack' monsters, or take control of them to do his bidding to help him fight Neo Cortex and his hordes of henchmen. When Crash doesn't need the monster he puts it in his pocket for later use, Crash and his monsters can be upgraded as well by collecting jewels, or Mojo.
