Is Proprietary Software to Blame for the World's Ills?

Proprietary software might not be responsible for the economic downturn -- or is it? -- but it has set an unfortunate tone, writes columnist Jeremiah T. Gray. Teaching children, especially in the developing world, that the Redmond Way is the only way sets a dangerous precedent.

OPINIONIs Proprietary Software to Blame for the World's Ills?

Proprietary software might not be responsible for the economic downturn -- or is it? -- but it has set an unfortunate tone, writes columnist Jeremiah T. Gray. Teaching children, especially in the developing world, that the Redmond Way is the only way sets a dangerous precedent.

Proprietary Blobs and the Pursuit of a Free Kernel

jammag writes "Ever since the GNewSense team pointed out that the Linux kernel contains proprietary firmware blobs, the question of whether a given distro is truly free software has gotten messier, notes Linux pundit Bruce Byfield. The FSF changed the definition of a free distribution, and a search for how to respond to this new definition is now well underway. Who wins and what solutions are implemented could have a major effect on the future of free and open source software. Debian has its own solution (by allowing users to choose their download), as do Ubuntu and Fedora (they include the offending firmware by default but make it possible to remove it). Meanwhile, the debate over firmware rages on. What resolves this issue?"

Proprietary Firmware and the Pursuit of a Free Kernel

Given that the Linux kernel contains proprietary firmware blobs, determining whether a GNU/Linux distribution is actually free has gotten far less clear.

Should Proprietary Software Companies Be More Concerned About Open Source Or Piracy?

We see various software companies and their representatives like the BSA complaining constantly about the damaging impact of piracy on their business, but reader Jon sent in an article that explores how piracy of proprietary software often does just as much, if not more, harm to open source alternatives. So, for example, when people make an unauthorized copy of Photoshop, doesn't that hurt open source providers of the GiMP just as much as Adobe? And an unauthorized copy of Microsoft Office hits the Open Office crew.

Slumberland rests easy after move away from proprietary Unix

In 2005, when Slumberland faced end-of-lifecycle replacements of its proprietary Unix platform, its warehouse management system (WMS) vendor suggested a move to Red Hat Linux and commodity x86 servers. Seth Mitchell, the infrastructure team manager at the large furniture retailer, gladly agreed. Upper management wasn't quite as quick to jump on the open source bandwagon, but once the cost savings started rolling in, everyone agreed that it was a profitable decision.

Open Source Transforms Software TCO

Determining TCO is simple, in principle. Just add up the estimated costs over the time of use. Some costs, such as training, typically are similar for open source software – OSS — and proprietary software. The initial licensing fees are often different. OSS often has little or no initial licensing fees, while the initial licensing fees are often substantial for proprietary software. This means that you can often "try out" OSS as long as you like, and then pay for support later once the software becomes more important to your business.

When We Said We Were In Favor Of Open Source Voting, This Isn't What We Meant

We've often wondered why various governments haven't mandated open source e-voting systems. After all, if a free and democratic election is supposed involve true transparency into the voting process, it's hard to see how proprietary software can be allowed. However, the big e-voting companies have been staunch supporters of keeping their solutions proprietary. Except... it may turn out that Premier Election Solutions (which was better known as Diebold until it changed its name to get away from the mocking laughter) is actually using some open source software... and not abiding by the license. Artifex Software is suing Premier for apparently using its GPL'd software and not adhering to the GPL terms. Of course, we should note that Diebold (er.

Red Hat Ditching Oracle for Network Spacewalk

Red Hat's open source Network application project evolves with a plan to get rid of Oracle on the back end. "The application code for Spacewalk is open source, but we are using a proprietary back end for the database," Todd Warner Product Manager, RHN Satellite and Project Spacewalk told InternetNews.com. "For an open source project that's a problem since we have all these open source bits and it requires a proprietary database. It's a big Achilles heal that we'll be focusing a tremendous amount of effort to rectify."

Revolutions Medical Patent News

Revolutions Medical Corporation (OTCBB: RMCP – News) is pleased to report that it has recently received a notice of allowance through its patent attorney Richard Moseley from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for issuance as a patent for its Rev Vac Safety syringe. This patent will be issued shortly and will be the second US patent protecting its proprietary Rev Vac Safety Syringe. Ron Wheet, CEO of Revolutions Medical states "the timing couldn't be any better. As we await clearance from the FDA on our pre-market 510k application for our Rev Vac Safety Syringe, we now will have two strong US patents protecting our proprietary technology. In addition, we have also spent the time and money necessary to protect our US patents internationally over the last 6 months.

VMware's Mobile Virtualization Strategy Calls for Open Source Responses

Proprietary virtualization player VMWare has just announced its VMWare Mobile Virtualization Platform (MVP) designed to bring virtualization to mobile phones. It's due to ship in 2009, and is a lightweight software layer that can run even on memory-constrained phones. For several reasons, this virtualization platform could have an impact on mobile phones running open source operating systems, and on application development for mobile open source operating systems.

Open source identity: Free Telephony Project founder David Rowe

Move over proprietary telephony systems. Australian engineer David Rowe started the Free Telephony Project three years ago to build an affordable IP-PABX system out of free hardware and software. That’s right, the design of the Free Telephony Project IP-PABX is open for any interested person to review and improve. With the first Free Telephony Project products now available and in use world-wide, Rowe hopes it will go along way to improving the availability of voice services in developing nations. In this edition of Open Source Identity, TechWorld interviews Rowe to uncover the burgeoning business of open product development.
