Panasonic Proposes Blu-ray Disc Standard for 3D Imagery

Panasonic Corp of Japan has disclosed the submission of a proposal to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), for a Blu-ray Disc standard to store three-dimensional (3D) imagery formed of left-/right-eye two-channel full-High Definition (HD) images (1,920 x 1,080 pixels). It is also considering submitting a proposal for a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) standard capable of transmitting 3D imagery. The BDA hopes to begin formal discussion on the standard proposal before the end of 2008, with commercial adoption probably in 2010.

Panasonic Submits 3D Standard Proposal for Blu-ray Disc

Panasonic has been reported to have submitted a proposal to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) concerning a Blu-ray Disc standard that would store movies in 3D. Basically, the idea involves the company's 3D full HD System which includes a Blu-ray Disc player able to distribute 1080p full HD images to left eye and right eye, recorded onto a BD. The technology has been developed by the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL), and allows recording 3D images onto a single, standard BD.

FCC chairman Kevin Martin has dropped his controversial proposal to overhaul telecoms rules from today’s meeting of the commission. As the AP notes, not only were consumer groups and parts of the telecoms industry opposed to the vote, but four fellow FCC commissioners, Democrats Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein and Republicans Robert McDowell and Deborah Tate--argued that a public review of the proposal was necessary before moving ahead.

Municipal Art Society releases Coney plan

The Municipal Art Society of New York, a non-profit urban planning, design and preservation group, released its proposal for Coney Island today. The plan calls for Coney Island to feature indoor and outdoor event and performance space starting in summer 2009, including a renovated, 2,300-seat Shore Theater, combining a vaudeville theater and a circus. The proposal includes a cable-car ride that would connect Coney Island's attractions. Events and programs could include a Halloween parade, video game competitions, an international music festival and international graffiti contests. The society will provide more details about funding at the end of the year. The city is planning a 9-acre entertainment area in Coney Island and is in negotiations to buy 10.

ICANN has based the cost of a generic TLD on what it believes will be the cost to evaluate applications and protect the organization against risk, said Paul Levins, ICANN's executive officer and vice president for corporate affairs.
