Anatomy of a Runaway Project

JCWDenton recommends a piece by Bruce Webster revealing some insights into a failed multi-million-dollar IT project. "The following document is the actual text — carefully redacted — of a memo I wrote some time back after performing an IT project review; names and identifying concepts have been changed to preserve confidentiality (and protect the guilty). The project in question was a major IT re-engineering effort for a mission-critical system; at the time I did this review, the project had been going on for several years and had cost millions of dollars; it would eventually be canceled and the work products abandoned. The memo itself provides an interesting glimpse into just how a major IT project can go so far off the tracks that nothing useful is ever delivered.

The Principles of Project Management

zedguy writes "Ask someone what 'project management' is and you're liable to get a few blank stares — it's one of those fields people have heard of, but probably have problems pinning down a definition. So that is what the first section of the book does: provides a definition that can be summed up as applying tools and skills to complete a project. That then leads to what exactly is a "project": a set of tasks with a time-frame and goal of somehow adding value. So yes, the introduction does involve a fair bit of terminology that isn't going to be familiar to many readers coming from a coder's background, but there's a helpful appendix that lays out many of the terms. Just as important, the introduction explains what project management is not, some of the misconceptions and why it's good to know.

Texas To Build $4.93B Wind-Power Project

Hugh Pickens points out a story in the NYTimes about Texas' $4.93 billion wind-power transmission project. One of the major goals of the project is to improve electrical throughput to the population centers. Current transmission lines are unable to handle all of the power generated by Texas' wind fields. State citizens will be paying slightly more to help cover the cost, though the project is expected to eventually lower the cost to consumers. Quoting: "The lines can handle 18,500 megawatts of power, enough for 3.7 million homes on a hot day when air-conditioners are running. 'The project will ease a bottleneck that has become a major obstacle to development of the wind-rich Texas Panhandle and other areas suitable for wind generation. The lack of transmission has been a fundamental issue in Texas, and it's becoming more and more of an is

Rare Tour of Sun Microsystems' "Wonderland"

Surinder Kahai writes "Last week I had the rare opportunity to see an emerging virtual world called Wonderland, the product of an open source project, Project Wonderland, sponsored by Sun Microsystems. The tour was given by Nicole Yankelovich, Principal Investigator of the Collaborative Environments Project at Sun Microsystems. Some of the key aspects of this dynamic virtual world are voice communication with distance attenuation, the ability to join a Wonderland meeting through a regular phone if a computer is not handy, and the sharing of applications such as Open Office. Wonderland is currently being used by educational facilities and can be used by other organizations for virtual collaboration. Since the project is an Open Source project, users can tweak the tools available to suit their particular purpose.

Project Management: The Application

The main project management application that we will examine deals with maintaining user state (tracking users) and all major events that make the application useful, such as adding, removing, and editing projects. It will also enable users to assign tasks and add or remove project staff, as well as maintain files for a particular project.

Fedora Nightlife Project Harnesses Idle Computer Power

"Bryan Che, part of the project management team at Red Hat, started a new project at Fedora this week called Nightlife. Based on the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Condor Project, Nightlife will give people the ability 'to donate idle capacity from their own computers to an open, general-purpose Fedora-run grid for processing socially beneficial work and scientific research that requires access to large amounts of computing power.'

Open Source Cards Project Meets Objections

An attempt to create an open-source set of public safety protocol cards has run into a legal setback after a commercial company issued an Internet cease-and-desist order that claimed copyright infringement. The cards were developed by the Open ISES Project, which has also developed an open-source CAD software application, and posted on-line just last March. However, last week the group says it received a letter from attorneys representing Medical Priority Consultants, who apparently stated that the open source cards infringed on the company's copyrights. In response, the Project took down the cards, and issued a statement explaining their actions. "We are hoping that we can work out an agreement with them. However, until such time, we had to take the site and associated files down," said Robert Austin, who manages the Project.

Party of one: Surviving the solo open source project

With more than 100,000 open source projects hosted on SourceForge alone, starting a new one is no small undertaking, and bringing it to the masses is hardly a sure thing. In this article reprinted from Pushing Pixels, Kirill Grouchnikov explores the challenges and pitfalls of being the sole developer on an open source project. Whether you're thinking about starting a solo development project or struggling to maintain one, get tips for structuring your development timeline, managing development priorities, and finding a niche for your project, even in the vast sea of open source software.

EU observatory to guide policymakers on nanotechnologies

An EU project to establish a European Observatory on Nanotechnologies is seeking to address the lack of objective and independent information on nanotech for policymakers, industry and investors. The ObservatoryNANOexternal project was launched as a first step on the way to establishing a permanent European Observatory on Nanotechnologies. Once established, it would provide "ongoing, independent support to decision-makers," according to the consortium. Launched in April 2008, the project will be funded for four years from the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7) and has a total budget of %u20AC4 million. The project consortium, led by the UK Institute of Nanotechnology (IoNexternal ), brings together partners from different fields of application of nanotech.

Reader Question: How do you get what you need from clients?

I feel exploited when a customer takes to much time to send me all the images, texts, videos, ideas etc that I need to complete the project. In the meantime, severals changes are asked from the client. A web site project could take 3 months! Eating peanut butter 3 months in a row is not very interesting (it’s juste an exemple of how poor I can be cause I wait for my money). A project could be finished in 2 short weeks (that never happened to me)… Even if I charge 40% of the total price at the beginning, I always feel that I’m more interested in finishing the project that the customer is. Sometimes I wonder if I’m in the good job in my life, but I prefer to be poor sometimes than having a boss. I’m open to any ideas to not feel exploited, and sorry if I’m definatly not in the topic, that’s what I understood from the article, feeling exploi

Mozilla Launches Security Metrics Project

Earthweb passes along a ZDNet article which notes, "In partnership with indie security consultant Rich Mogull, Mozilla has launched a valuable Security Metrics Project that could help to — we can only hope — put an end to the silly notion that patch-counting helps to determine a product's security posture. The idea is to develop a metrics model that goes beyond simple bug counts to accurately reflect the effectiveness of secure development efforts and the relative risk to users over time. Mogull has released a spreadsheet (.xls) with a preliminary version of the model and Mozilla's Window Snyder is actively seeking feedback to make the project open and meaningful."
