Nanotech Produces Bizarre "Flat" Atom

According to a story on Daily Tech, Nanoelectronics researchers have discovered a bizarre shaped molecule in one of their devices can act as first known quantum state-manipulable atom.

NPSA produces new DVD to educate healthcare professionals on hand hygiene

The National Patient Safety Agency’s (NPSA’s) “cleanyourhands” campaign has produced a new DVD to educate and inform healthcare workers on the importance of good hand hygiene in preventing infection. The DVD was produced after surveys and feedback from trusts revealed that their staff did not always know when to use soap and water and when to opt for the alcohol handrub. It includes demonstrations of how healthcare workers should clean their hands.

Nanotech Produces Bizarre "Flat" Atom, Hailed as Quantum Computing Breakthrough

A visualization of the molecule. The triangular depression on the bottom right represents the arsenic atom. The dots in the center saucer are bonding locations for a single electron. The yellow dots in the upper left center are bonding locations in which the electron is in a quantum state.

Samsung Mass Produces 128GB SSD

Lucas123 writes "Samsung Electronics said today it is now mass-producing solid-state drives with a 128GB capacity, and it will begin production of a 256GB product later this year, ahead of its scheduled 2009 release. Samsung's 128GB and 64GB SSDs are available in 1.8-in. and 2.5-in. Currently, solid state disk costs about $3.45 per gigabyte and spinning disk costs about $0.38 per gig."

Galaxy Zoo Produces a Rare Specimen

We discussed the Galaxy Zoo project soon after it launched last summer. Science News is now following developments about an odd celestial object that is fueling a lot of excitement among astronomers around the world. In August a Dutch schoolteacher named Hanny, in the process of characterizing galaxy images, noticed a peculiar object and posted a query about it on the Galaxy Zoo blog. She called it a "Voorwerp," which Science News says is Dutch for "thing" but which Google translates as "subject." Hanny's Voorwerp emits mostly green light (the earlier report said blue). The best guess astronomers have now is that the Voorwerp is emitting "ghost light," i.e. it is "lit by the ultraviolet light and X-rays from a quasar that has vanished in the last 100,000 years," to quote astronomer Bill Keel.

Nanotech process produces plastics that are 10 times more stretchable

Move over, Rumplestiltskin. Researchers in China report the first successful "electrospinning" of a type of plastic widely used in automobiles and electronics. The high-tech process, which uses an electric charge to turn polymers into thin fibers in the presence of electricity, produced plastic mats that can stretch 10 times more without breaking than the original material and could lead to new uses for the plastic, they say. Their study is scheduled for the June 10 issue of ACS' Macromolecules.

Fungus That Produces Biofuels From Plants: Genome Sequenced

The fungus Trichoderma reesei optimally breaks down plants into simple sugars, the basic components of ethanol. The fungus's genome has recently been sequenced by researchers from the Architecture et fonction des macromolcules biologiques laboratory (CNRS/Universit de la Mditerrane and Universite de Provence), working together with an American team. The results show that only a few genes are responsible for the fungus's enzymatic activity. They offer new avenues for the fabrication of second generation biofuels from plant waste.

Hekuma robot system produces petri dishes

The automation works with cycle times down to four seconds, with very gentle handling of the petri dishes into the process flow. Another feature is a high degree of flexibility, to handle different product dimensions and packaging sizes.

Nanotube Reinforced Material Produces Denser Bone Tissue

In the first study of its kind, bioengineers and bioscientists at Rice University and Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands, have shown they can grow denser bone tissue by sprinkling stick-like nanoparticles throughout the porous material used to pattern the bone.

Betsy Ann Chocolates hopes focusing on e-commerce produces sweet results

Pittsburgh-based Betsy Ann American Chocolates, a gourmet chocolate retailer with stores in Pennsylvania as well as an e-commerce site, has been paring down its bricks-and-mortar locations to focus on e-commerce. The retailer has closed four stores in the last few months and plans to eliminate two more stores by the end of the week, bringing its number of retail locations to five.
