The Bank of England's latest half-yearly finan- cial stability report, published overnight, probably needs a new title. For, after the most profound financial crisis in living memory, if not in all time, the prevailing expectation is of more instability to come. Until order and calm are restored, and no-one knows when that might be, it should perhaps be renamed the (in)stability report.

You have probably seen many web sites with windows that seem to appear out of nowhere on the screen. I am not a very sophisticated mobile phone user. I don't use most of the bells and whistles on my phone, probably because I don't know what they even are. But just because I'm an idiot about USING mobile phones doesn't mean I don't understand the emerging mobile market, to which I have been paying a lot of attention of late. And why not? As personal computers fade from what Al Mandel called "ubiquity to invisibility," something has to take over. And everyone I respect thinks the new dominant platform will be mobile. So it's my job to tell you, then, that Windows Mobile is probably doomed.

MELBOURNE: Ricky Ponting has ranked the ‘over-rate controversy’ there as his toughest time in cricket along with last summer’s Sydney fiasco. At the launch of his book in Sydney, Ponting said: "(Sydney) was probably the most difficult time I’ve had to deal with as an Australian captain and an Australian player and I’m probably confronting the other one right at the moment," said Ponting.

Icon Smolt is a opt-in hardware profiler developed by Fedora Project and now adopted by OpenSUSE and in consideration by Ubuntu as well. While originally developed for understanding commonly used hardware, InternetNews looks at the potential for Smolt to be a tool to count Linux users. "Smolt could also potentially be a tool for counting the total number of users for a given platform, though that's not its ideal use case. The Linux Foundation's Ts'o noted that Smolt probably wound not be that great for counting Linux users as a whole. Fedora's Frields agreed, noting that Smolt is probably not as good for counting users as it is for counting proportional use of hardware across the user base. 'We prefer to count users with other methods, which we document on our wiki openly and transparently,' Frields said.

"A wise man once said to me: "Mike, " he said; "If you always remember to keep your mind focused and follow the simple and logical path of progression in every area of your life, you will accomplish many great things." As I pondered his words, he added the following punctuation, which has since become a part of the definition of "me." He added: "Of course, you'll eventually die with the realization that you missed out on 99% of your life and you'll most probably be miserable and bored at the end of both the literal and figurative day. Well before you reach your expiration date your milk will have already turned into cottage cheese. Leave me now and go do something either irrational, contrary or both, but just go. And have fun!" He was probably the most upbeat nihilist I've ever met ;)"

The Phoenix robot lander, situated in the arctic dune seas of Mars, has ceased communicating and NASA does not expect to hear from it again. The onset of autumn in the chilly polar plains of the Red Planet has, as was expected, meant that the probe's solar panels can no longer supply sufficient power to keep it running.

Some interesting news this week on the smart phone front: First, AT&T and Sony Ericsson announced that its Xperia X1 device will go on sale in the U.S. the day after Thanksgiving. The $800 (yes, not a typo) device will be a likely tough sell, because it will be sold exclusively at AT&T, which, by the way, already sells the iPhone (and at a much lower rate). Why is the price tag so high? Because the device is unlocked, so in theory you could buy an X1 and then take it to another carrier and run it on their network. There's just a teensy small problem, though: The X1 runs on the GSM network, so the only other carrier in the U.S. that you could run to is T-Mobile, and it just so happens that the X1 can't run on the frequencies that T-Mobile's 3G network uses here.
