Call for Artists: Factor Prize for Southern Art

The Gibbes Museum of Art is pleased to announce the second year of the Elizabeth and Mallory Factor Prize for Southern Art. The Factor Prize, given annually with a cash prize of $10,000, acknowledges an artist whose work contributes to a new understanding of the South. Unlike any other award of its type, the Factor Prize is designed to create an online archive of information about Southern artists that can be used by curators, collectors, academicians and the public.

Video Artist Wins Britain's Turner Prize

Mark Leckey, a multimedia artist whose exhibition “Industrial Light & Magic” combines recreated images of Felix the Cat, Homer Simpson and the movie “Titanic,” won the 2008 Turner Prize on Monday, the BBC reported. The annual prize, presented by the Tate Gallery in London to a British artist under the age of 50, comes with an award of about $37,000, and is often given to creators of untraditional and provocative works. Mr. Leckey, a professor of film studies at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, was presented with the prize by the rock musician Nick Cave at a ceremony. According to the judges, Mr. Leckey’s work “celebrates the imagination of the individual and our potential to inhabit, reclaim or animate an idea, a space or an object,” the BBC said.

Pinchuk Center Introduces New Ukrainian Art Prize

KIEV—The Pinchuk Art Center in Kiev has established a prize for young Ukrainian artists, Artforum reports. The privately funded prize will be awarded every two years to an artist under the age of 35. The winner receives approximately $20,000; two lesser awards of $5,000 will be given out as well.

François Morellet Wins Debut Prize for Concrete Art

WURZBURG, Germany—The German city of Würzburg has presented the French artist François Morellet with its first Peter C. Ruppert Prize for Concrete Art in Europe, reports the Süddeutsche Zeitung via Artforum. Since 2006, Armadillo Aerospace has made an annual late-October trek west from its Dallas-area base of operations to New Mexico to compete in the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge, run by the X Prize Foundation with prize money provided by NASA’s Centennial Challenges program. For the first two years Armadillo was the only team to field a vehicle in the actual competition (many other teams had signed up, but could not get their vehicles ready in time to fly at the event), and last year Armadillo was the odds-on favorite to win at least Level 1, the less rigorous of the two levels of the competition.
