To Take Flight, Bump Up the Size of Your Genome

At Genomicron, T. Ryan Gregory presents evidence from a colleague's recently published paper and his own grad students' work to show that pterosaur genomes were downsized prior to evolving the ability to fly. Pterosaurs could fly 70 million years before birds and 150 million years prior to bats. "The story thus seems to be that genome reduction occurred in the dinosaur lineage of which birds are descendants before flight (so did feathers, bipedalism, and other characteristics), but were later further adjusted when flight arose (as were feathers, etc.)," he writes. "So it's not flight per se that matters, but a feature linked with flight."

Why didn't the wives say no?

I'm annoyed by this morning's story that Allen Stanford has apologised to the England players for leering at their wives and for asking Mrs Matt Prior to sit on his lap. I'm not saying that the middle-aged fool has behaved well and of course an apology is appropriate, but why is he the only one to blame? Or rather, why didn't Mrs Prior tell Stanford to sod off when he asked her to sit on his lap? I'm sure that's what my wife would do in the unlikely event that she should be at a party with Rupert Murdoch and the boss asked her to perch on his knees. Or at the very least she would refuse politely.

US - Patents - How to preserve absolute novelty

You have an invention you want to patent. To qualify in most countries, your invention must meet the standard for so-called absolute novelty. This means it cannot have been sold or disclosed in prior patents, publications, trade brochures, advertisements, etc. Such items constitute what is referred to as the prior art.

If Article One forms an opinion that patents are invalid, Advisors earn up to U.S. $50,000, with $1,000,000 total being offered for launch.
