Networks Of Small Habitat Patches Can Preserve Urban Biodiversity

Sets of small and seemingly insignificant habitat patches that are within reach for mobile species may under certain circumstances, as a group, provide an acceptable alternative to larger and contiguous habitats. This finding can make preservation of important ecological functions possible even in urban and other heavily exploited areas.

Ethical Killing Machines

ubermiester writes "The New York Times reports on research to develop autonomous battlefield robots that would 'behave more ethically in the battlefield than humans.' The researchers claim that these real-life terminators 'can be designed without an instinct for self-preservation and, as a result, no tendency to lash out in fear. They can be built without anger or recklessness... and they can be made invulnerable to... "scenario fulfillment," which causes people to absorb new information more easily if it agrees with their pre-existing ideas.' Based on a recent report stating that 'fewer than half of soldiers and marines serving in Iraq said that noncombatants should be treated with dignity and respect, and 17 percent said all civilians should be treated as insurgents,' this might not be all that dumb an idea.

Downturn accelerates search innovations

There's nothing like downturn to spur innovation. A rash of new product and feature updates have recently been flung upon the search marketing industry, some better than others. This is nothing new: Canned food, Jeeps and the microwave oven also were born during a time of duress. The French government issued a prize for the inventor of an efficient and effective food preservation system when supplies were low; the Jeep was developed for a wartime bid; and the microwave oven was a chance discovery that helped a firm survive by diversifying when military orders came to an end. The question for today is, which of the following innovations will stick?

Wipro, Axway Collaborate to Offer B2Bi, EDI Managed Services as SaaS

India's Wipro Technologies and Axway (a US-based software company) have collaborated to provide business-to-business integration (B2Bi) and electronic data interchange (EDI) managed services to clients through Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. The strategic alliance will assist clients to focus on core operations; it will deploy IT applications on the basis of pay-as-you-go pricing and lower maintenance and IT skills preservation.
