8 -9 May: Gradcam Conference - Arts Research: The State of Play

Dublin, 01 May 2008: A major international conference will take place in Dublin’s Project Arts Centre next week to examine practice-based doctoral research across the performing arts, visual arts, design, architecture and media. Organised by newly-established Graduate School of Creative Arts & Media (GradCAM) and the HETAC Working Group on Practice Based Research, the conference will profile high-level case-studies to help frame key issues and questions in both policy and practice.

Firefox Appears Ready to Crack 20% Share Next Month

CWmike writes "Mozilla's Firefox browser is on pace to hit the 20% market-share mark next month. Mozilla marketing VP Vince Vizzaccaro didn't pin all of Firefox's increase on a change last month to its update dialog, he did note the new approach. "Mozilla has implemented a change in Firefox 3.0 [Release Candidate 1] where the installation now has a checkbox that defaults to making Firefox your default browser," he explained. He refused to ding Mozilla for the practice. 'The option is clearly displayed and labeled, unlike Safari, which misleadingly labeled the Safari install as an "update" [but has] since correctly changed to an 'install.' However, this practice is a break from the traditional practice browsers employed of defaulting this option to off.

Digging Up The Dirt On Mars: NASA's Phoenix Lander Checking Soil Properties

Phoenix's planned activities for Saturday include horizontally extending a trench where the lander dug two practice scoops earlier this week, and taking additional images of a small pile of soil that was scooped up and dropped onto the surface during the second of those practice digs. More >>

Google named in lawsuit for ad clicks on parked sites...

Google is reportedly placing a percentage of its AdWords ads on parked and error sites, which carries no benefit for paying consumers. This practice has landed the search engine giant in hot water, with a federal class action lawsuit filed on Thursday in a US District Court in San Jose, California. Lawyer and Google advertiser Hal Levitte noticed the practice back in 2007, then filed a complaint late last week claiming Google is unjustly enriching its promises. The lawsuit was filed by Kabateck Brown Kellner, and, if approved by the judge, could involve a large numbers of litigants who advertised with Google in the last four years.

Beating Comcast's Sandvine On Linux With Iptables

HiroDeckard writes "Multiple sites reported a while ago that Comcast was using Sandvine to do tcp packet resets to throttle BitTorrent connections of their users. This practice may be a thing of the past as it's been found a simple rule in the Linux firewall, iptables, can simply just block their reset packets, returning your BitTorrent back to normal speeds and allowing you to once again connect to all your seeds and peer. If blocking the tcp packet resets becomes a common practice, on and off of Linux, it'll be interesting to see the next move in the cat-and-mouse game between customers and service providers, and who controls that bandwidth."

The Continuum for Google Shares Continues

You can read a pretty fair explanation of Wall Street's reception of Google's earnings report here. To Blodget's thoughts, I would add that Google's practice has been not to play the mug's game of 'guidance'. This decision cuts both ways for any stock, up and down, but providing guidance also cuts both ways. I prefer Google continue their practice of no guidance.

Crossing Borders with Laptops and PDAs

Last month a US court ruled that border agents can search your laptop, or any other electronic device, when you're entering the country. They can take your computer and download its entire contents, or keep it for several days. Customs and Border Patrol has not published any rules regarding this practice, and I and others have written a letter to Congress urging it to investigate and regulate this practice.

GoDaddy VP Caught Bidding Against Customers

An anonymous reader writes "A GoDaddy Vice President has been caught bidding against customers in their own domain name auctions. The employee Adam Dicker isn't just any GoDaddy employee; he's head of the GoDaddy subsidiary that controls the auctions. Dicker won some of the domains he bid for, and pushed up the bid price on auctions he didn't win. The conflict of interest is unethical, but could this practice also be illegal? Said a representative for a competitor, 'Even if controlled, that practice has bad news written all over it.' This comes hot on the heels of news that despite earlier promises to ICANN to end their 60-Day ban on transfers, GoDaddy quietly circumvented it by forcing customers to agree to the ban anyway. ICANN doesn't appear to be investigating or asking follow-up questions about this.

Practice makes Ponting perfect

RICKY Ponting isn't given to self-congratulation. Perhaps out of humility, perhaps from a sense of perfectionism, the Australian captain generally stresses the need to focus and improve rather than reflect glowingly on his own achievements.

Java Theory and Practice: Going Wild With Generics 2

IconWildcards can be very confusing when it comes to generics in the Java language, and one of the most common mistakes is to fail to use one of the two forms of bounded wildcards ("? super T" and "? extends T") when needed. You've made this mistake? Don't feel bad, even the experts have, and this month Brian Goetz shows you how to avoid it.
