Are SSD Really More Power Efficient?

Bakasama writes "Tom's Hardware compared the power performance of several available SSD cards with a Rotating HDD that was chosen specifically for its poor power efficiency. The results seem to fly in the face of current wisdom. 'Flash-based solid state drives (SSDs) are considered to be the future of performance hard drives, and everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. We are no exception, as we have been publishing many articles on flash-based SSDs during the last few months, emphasizing the performance gains and the potential power savings brought by flash memory. And there is nothing wrong with this, since SLC flash SSDs easily outperform conventional hard drives today (SLC = single level cell). However, we have discovered that the power savings aren't there: in fact, battery runtimes actually decrease if you use a flash SSD.

Fujitsu: 256Mbit FCRAM for digital consumer electronics

Fujitsu announces the development of a 256Mbit Consumer FCRAM for digital consumer electronics, the MB81EDS256545. The new FCRAM has low power consumption and is suited for system-in-package designs, with samples available from today. Key features include a 64-bit I/O, a low power DDR SDRAM interface that enables data transfer capabilities equivalent to two DDR2 SDRAMs with 16-bit I/O while reducing power consumption by up to 1W. This contributes to power savings for digital consumer electronics and makes the new device ideal for consumer electronics products that require low power consumption, such as digital televisions and camcorders.

Power Telecom begins fibre expansion on Java

Indonesian fibre-optic network provider Power Telecom has launched the second phase of its network rollout programme on Java, to increase the availability of telecoms and internet access in the region, reports The Jakarta Post. According to a Power Telecom official quoted by the paper, stage two comprises a 833km fibre-optic link connecting Jakarta and Surabaya which will augment a 500km network link in Greater Jakarta and Bandung, expected to be completed next month. Power Telecom is spending IDR800 billion (USD86 million) in its Java fibre-optic deployment and aims to complete the rollout in September, said the firm’s president Dicky Tjokosaputro. In 2007 the company signed a contract with government-owned railway company PT Kereta Api to install the network along its railway in a 20-year deal.

Linux Beats Windows 2008 Power-Saving Measures

IconGreen, power reduction, and climate change are all the rage these days, and the world of computers is not off the hook on this one. Software and hardware manufacturers are trying hard to keep power consumption down - while first something for mostly mobile computers, desktops and servers are now part of the effort too. PC World tested Windows Server 2008 and two Linux server offerings and compared their power usage patterns.

Making power policy just work

The kernel can't know if you want those low-priority processes to use all the CPU power on the system, or if you want them to pile up on one CPU and save power on the rest. Developers debate the best way to set the system's power rules.

Fujitsu vows faster, low-power RAM for handhelds...

Fujitsu on Tuesday unveiled a new version of its Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM that it believes should give the performance of conventional memory with the power of mobile memory. By using a 64-bit wide interface, the chipmaker can produce memory which is faster than two typical 16-bit DDR2 memory sticks while also dropping the resistors that consume much of the power; a 256-megabit (32MB) edition of the new FCRAM chip uses about 70 percent less power, or one watt less, than ordinary RAM.

SiliconBlue Unveils New FPGA Technology for Handheld, Ultra-Low Power Applications

June 2, 2008 -- SiliconBlue today announced a new class of single-chip, ultra low-power FPGA devices, that set a new industry standard for price, power and space along with unprecedented ASIC-like logic capacity for battery-powered, handheld consumer applications. Manufactured on TSMCs 65nm LP (low-power) standard CMOS process, the new single-chip iCE family of FPGAs incorporate the companys proprietary NVCM (Non-Volatile Configuration Memory) technology, eliminating external flash PROM costs while making it easy-to-use.

Latest 'Green' Power Generation — Your Feet.

gbjbaanb writes "Remember those ideas that suggested hooking gym machines to the power grid? Well, the Times is reporting that something like this to harness free energy is about to become a reality — the footfall of trudging shoppers is to become the latest source of emission-free energy. 'Engineers who have modelled the effects of the technology at Victoria Underground station in central London have calculated that the 34,000 travellers passing through every hour could power 6,500 lightbulbs. ... The plans for heel-strike generation follow successful trials last year at a bridge in the Midlands where generators converted energy from trains passing above into electricity powering a flood detector.' Possibly the most important thing for the readership is at the end: 'There could also be a range of domestic uses, for example powering iPo
