Ponting tells of request to drop complaint

NAGPUR (Agencies): Ricky Ponting has said he was approached by a senior member of the India touring party during the acrimonious Sydney Test and asked to drop Australia’s complaint against Harbhajan Singh. Harbhajan was alleged to have racially abused Andrew Symonds during the game and Ponting said that even before Harbhajan’s three-Test ban was handed down it was clear the matter would not be straightforward. Ponting’s recollections are revealed in his Captain’s Diary 2008, an extract of which has been published in the Weekend Australian. “On the night after we made our on-field report about Harbhajan, I had a phone conversation with a senior member of the Indian touring party, who asked me straight to drop the complaint,” Ponting wrote.

Warne hopes Ponting learns from mistakes

Shane Warne believes Ricky Ponting could learn something from Allan Border and Ian Chappell, two of the former captains who criticised Ponting over his tactics in the fourth Test in Nagpur. But Warne said although Ponting made some bad decisions it was important he was not hung out to dry.

Wrist causes more pain for Ponting

Ricky Ponting will have his right wrist reassessed in Melbourne this week after it caused him some discomfort during the Test series against New Zealand. Ponting is not expected to be in doubt for the upcoming matches against South Africa, although a leading sports doctor said the injury could eventually shorten Ponting's career.

Hussey, Ponting set up Australia

OVAL (Agencies): Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting produced contrasting half-centuries on a day when Australia continued to control the second Test but could not bury New Zealand in perfect batting conditions. At stumps the hosts were 3 for 241, 29 behind New Zealand’s below-par 270, and had lost a couple of opportunities to ensure they were the only ones capable of winning the game. Hussey grafted to an unbeaten 69 from 178 deliveries after Ponting shone with a classy 79 to lift the side after both openers departed before lunch. The pair’s 106-run third-wicket stand settled Australia as Ponting, who rattled 13 fours in his 124-ball stay, showed everyone how to bat on the placid pitch. However, he donated his wicket when aiming a pull to the two-metre Peter Fulton at midwicket without adding to his tea score.

Steve Waugh joins list of Ponting critics

Steve Waugh, the man who Ricky Ponting succeeded as Australia's Test captain, has said Ponting made a mistake by using part-time bowlers instead of his main strikers on the fourth day in Nagpur. Ponting has been widely criticised for the choices he made after tea on Sunday, when a quick string of wickets could have given Australia a realistic chance of victory.

Oz cricket chief backs Ponting

SYDNEY (Agencies): Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting has received strong backing from Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland over the over rate debacle in the fourth Test against India. Speaking at the launch of Ponting's Captain's Diary 2008, Sutherland backed Ponting's decision to bowl spinners and part-timers in a bid to reel back a slow over rate when wickets were needed to salvage the series, ultimately lost 2-0. "His batting speaks for itself, but given the events of this week perhaps some need reminding that he is already a cricketing great. He is a player that has always put the team first and he has never measured success by personal statistics," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Sutherland, as saying. "Any suggestion that he put himself first ahead of the team last week in Nagpur is completely off beam and can only come fr

Ponting considers playing two spinners

Ricky Ponting has raised the possibility of Australia playing two spinners in the fourth Test in Nagpur as they search for a way to collect 20 wickets for the first time in the series. Ponting was also concerned about the lack of penetration from Stuart Clark, who could be the unlucky man to miss out if an extra slow bowler is added to the starting line-up.

Ponting an ordinary captain, says Thomson

Melbourne: Ricky Ponting may be considered a premier batsman in contemporary cricket but as a skipper he is pretty ordinary, feels Australian bowling great Jeff Thomson. Thomson said he was never convinced of Ponting’s leadership qualities and the resounding 2-0 series defeat against India only vindicates his view. “I always thought he was an ordinary captain and this proves it,” said Thomson . — PTI

Ponting in more trouble with over-rates

BRISBANE: At the end of the first Test Ricky Ponting felt Australia did "a pretty good job" of staying in touch with the over-rate, but the team has been fined for the second game in a row by the match referee Chris Broad. Ponting was docked 30% of his match fee of A$12,750, double the punishment of his team-mates, for being three behind during the 149-run victory over New Zealand that ended on the fourth morning.

Sutherland to query Ponting on tactics

Cricket Australia will ask Ricky Ponting to clarify his reasons for using part-time bowlers after tea on the fourth day in Nagpur when Australia had a strong chance to set up a gettable chase. Australia had to win the Test to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and when India went to the break six down with a lead of 252, Ponting's men had a chance to go for the kill.

Sutherland backs Ponting's explanation

SYDNEY: Cricket Australia's chief executive James Sutherland has thrown his support behind Ricky Ponting over Australia's tactics in the fourth Test in Nagpur. Sutherland said on the fifth day of the match that he looked forward to speaking to Ponting to find out why Australia used part-time slow bowlers on the previous day when they had a chance to try and knock over India's lower order quickly.

Nielsen explains Ponting's tactics

At stumps on Sunday, before much of the criticism had occurred, Nielsen said he did not for a moment believe Ponting had failed to push hard to win the match.

Aussie coach complicates Ponting-Lee clash

NEW DELHI: The on-field dispute between Brett Lee and Ricky Ponting has taken a twist with the coach Tim Nielsen saying a poor over-rate was not the main reason the strike bowler was not used in the first session of the fourth day in Mohali. Lee, who has failed to penetrate in his first two Tests in India, argued with Ponting on a morning when the part-time medium pacer Michael Hussey, the debutant Peter Siddle, regular Mitchell Johnson and spinner Cameron White were all preferred to him.

Nielsen stands by Ponting's decision on over rate

Nagpur/Mumbai, November 10 (ANI): Australia coach Tim Nielsen stood by skipper Ricky Ponting's decision to use part-timers to step up the over rate instead of bringing on his fast bowlers after they had India in trouble in the final test on Sunday. India were 166 for six in their second innings at tea on day four of the fourth test but Ponting, whose team need to win to square the series, still chose to bring on Mike Hussey and Michael Clarke for 10 overs in a bid to improve their over rate.
