Plasma Plants Vaporize Trash While Creating Energy

Jason Sahler writes "Recently St. Lucie County in Florida announced that it has teamed up with Geoplasma to develop the United States' first plasma gasification plant. The plant will use super-hot 10,000 degree Fahrenheit plasma to effectively vaporize 1,500 tons of trash each day, which in turn spins turbines to generate 60MW of electricity — enough to power 50,000 homes!"

BALTIMORE, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- In the plasma TV patent infringement suit brought against Samsung SDI Co. by Pioneer Corporation, Invotex(R) Group damages expert Terry L. Musika testified on behalf of plaintiff Pioneer that the amount of total damages adequate to compensate for the claimed infringement was approximately $81 million. A damage expert from FTI Consulting, Inc. testified on behalf of the defendants that the total amount of damages adequate to compensate for infringement was approximately $12 million. On Tuesday, October 28, 2008, the jury decided that the two Pioneer Corporation patents asserted against the defendants were valid and infringed and awarded damages of $59.3 million before pre-judgment interest. LG Electronics to Invest $172 Million in Two Solar Cell Lines

LG Electronics (Seoul, South Korea), the world's third largest appliance maker and a leading global manufacturer of electronics and mobile communication products, has announced it will invest $172 million for building two solar cell lines at an existing plasma panel plant at the Gumi complex, about 100 miles southeast of Seoul. According to a report by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, TX), the electronics major intends to convert A1 plasma panel-manufacturing lines into solar production lines with each having a capacity of 120 megawatts per year. The project, which is slated to begin next month, is expected to be operational in early 2010. The first line will begin mass production from the first quarter of 2010, and the second line by early 2011.
