The Business Software Alliance's October report called Online Software Scams: A Threat to Your Security reveals the dangers of buying or downloading pirated software. Sadly, pirated software doesn't always advertise that it is counterfeit and often appears to be the "real thing" to the untrained eye. This poses a clear and present danger to anyone shopping for software, whether it be on a e-commerce site, peer to peer (P2) site or at a more traditional shopping venue.

The more counterfeit software companies use in their networks, the greater their risk of encountering IT related problems, according to a new Harrison Group study commissioned byMicrosoft. Apparently there's a new antitrust law in China that has local software companies scrambling to file suit against Microsoft for violating the law. However, Business Week has a rather pertinent question: if the vast majority of the Microsoft software in use in China is of the "pirated" variety, can Microsoft actually be held responsible for antitrust violations? Piracy is an ongoing problem in almost every industry nowadays, not the least of all, the gaming industry. According to Ubisoft, after Assassin's Creed was leaked six weeks early, the pirated version was downloaded over 700,000 times, costing it millions of dollars. But instead of going after those that downloaded the game, Ubisoft is doing the smart thing and going against the company responsible for the leak. Yet there is some relief in sight: Many manufacturers are now offering rebates.
