Scientists Pinpoint Origin Of Rare Dinosaur Nest

Canadian researchers have been given a unique look at dinosaur reproduction and the evolution of birds as they've narrowed down the likely owner of a dinosaur nest, abandoned on a river's edge 77 million years ago.

Scientists pinpoint gene behind language disorder

A common language disorder that affects one in 14 children has been linked to a gene for the first time, offering insights that ultimately promise better diagnosis and treatment.

Scientists pinpoint genes which increase your risk of lung cancer

Genes that increase your risk of developing lung cancer by up to 60 per cent have been identified by an international research team.

SA not pinpoint but still win big

One hates to be churlish after a convincing 128-run win, but South Africa's pace bowling was once again disappointing in the second MTN One-Day International against Bangladesh at Willowmoore Park on Sunday.

Digital Photos Act as Unique Fingerprints in Finding Criminals with Digital Cameras

Forensic specialists can now pinpoint the exact make and model of a camera simply by analyzing the pixels in digital photos. This technique would be useful in the future for tracking down criminals, such as kidnappers who've leaked photos of their hostages to the media. Read on to find out how it works.

SA can hear the fat lady singing

South Africa's bowling was hardly pinpoint but it was enough to see them to victory by 128 runs over Bangladesh in the second MTN One-Day International at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Sunday.

Cell Phone 911 Calls Are Hard To Locate

TAMPA -- In an ideal situation, when you dial 911 on a cell phone the police should be able to pinpoint your location down to just a few dozen yards, based on wireless signals from your phone.

Services Searching for a Niche

The location-based technology relies on global positioning satellites and the triangulation of cell base stations by mobile operators to pinpoint location. But while it has been successfully adapted for auto navigation, the same technology typically remains crude and unhelpful -- and unused -- for mobile navigation.

Sea animals navigate with magnetic maps

SCIENTISTS may have solved one of the most intriguing puzzles in marine biology - how sea creatures navigate across thousands of miles of ocean with pinpoint accuracy.

Protein Attributed to Membrane Repair Identified - Mechanism May Revolutionize Therapy in Human Disease

Researchers at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School have identified the protein MG53, as a key initiator of membrane repair in damaged tissue. The study, released today in Nature Cell Biology, is the first to specifically pinpoint a protein responsible for promoting cell repair.

Building materials e-retailer saves 15% of IT budget with performance tool

For nearly a year, BuildDirect tried without success to identify the issues that were causing web pages to load slowly. Its technical personnel suspected the delays were related to third-party applications integrated into the web site, but they couldn’t pinpoint the problem, even after trying several diagnostic tools, says Dan Brodie, director of IT at the online manufacturer and retailer of building materials.

First Complete Cancer Genome Sequenced

For the first time, a complete cancer genome, and incidentally a complete female genome, has been decoded, scientists report online Nov. 5 in Nature. In a study made possible by faster, cheaper and more sensitive methods for sequencing DNA, the researchers pinpoint eight new genes that may cause a cell to turn cancerous.

Zenoss adds VMware monitoring

Zenoss Inc., the Annapolis, Md.-based open source IT systems management company, has released a new version of its enterprise application that integrates monitoring of physical machines and VMware virtual machines (VMs) in the same console. Building on its initial limited foray last year into virtualization monitoring of VMware and Xen-based machines, Zenoss 2.3 taps native VMware application program interfaces (APIs) and its own data modeling tools to pinpoint the location, configuration and state of VMs and track how they change in real time, according to CEO and co-founder Bill Karpovich.

Feds Can Locate Cell Phones Without Telcos

schwit1 sends along an Ars Technica report covering the release of documents obtained under the FOIA suggesting that the Justice Department may have been evading privacy laws in their use of "triggerfish" technology. Triggerfish are cell-tower spoofing devices that induce cell phones to give up their location and other identifying information, without recourse to any cell carrier. "Courts in recent years have been raising the evidentiary bar law enforcement agents must meet in order to obtain historical cell phone records that reveal information about a target's location. But documents obtained by civil liberties groups under a Freedom of Information Act request suggest that 'triggerfish' technology can be used to pinpoint cell phones without involving cell phone providers at all.

Mystery Signals Choking YK Cell Phone Service

There's something on the radio waves that may be behind the disruptions in cellular phone service in Yellowknife. A spokesperson for Bell Canada says technicians are investigating the possible sources of the interference, but Alison Johnson says they don’t yet know what’s causing it. “This is a very uncommon situation and they are looking into it. Whatever’s causing the problem is not something that they’ve been able to identify as coming from within Bell’s network. According to Northwestel spokesperson, Anne Kennedy, there may be an external radio signal interfering with the cellular service. She says bell is consulting Industry Canada, the department that assigns radio frequencies to users, to see if they can help pinpoint the problem. The interruptions have been reported only in Yellowknife.
