Now that Picasa 3 is out of beta, I've had a look at the new version and updated my Picasa Review. There are some great improvements in this version and I think anyone who is still using version 2.7 has no reason not to upgrade. If you do a check for updates within Picasa 2.7, it'll probably tell you the program is up to date, so you may need to go here to download the new version. If you haven't checked out Picasa yet... why not? Did I mention it's free?

Although most of Google's software is available for the Mac, the company's Picasa photo application has been conspicuously absent. There hasn't been much in the way of Mac news related to Picasa, either, but some news appeared this week that is putting Picasa back in the minds of Mac users. According to an AppleInsider source, a Mac version of the software is not only coming, but is already undergoing internal beta testing at Google.

Google is allegedly beginning internally beta-testing a Mac version of its Picasa photo-management utility, according to AppleInsider. The tools have thus far been limited to only the Windows or Linux platforms. The service is currently partially cross-platform, but only in the sense that users can upload photos directly from iPhoto to Picasa. A separate uploader is available for Mac programs other than iPhoto.

"Picasa includes all the tools you'd expect from an easy-to-use photo editing program. These include cropping, red-eye editing, straighten images, and so on. It also makes all these functions easy to use, including the somewhat fancier ones such as adding tints or turning a color image into black and white or sepia.

I don't know about you, but I use my point-and-shoot camera to record video more often than hauling out my actual video camera. The result? Tons of 30-second snippets that I'd love to be able to share without posting them to YouTube. Google just made it a heck of a lot easier by adding video support to its Picasa Web albums.

The site features "Geotag" which lets you link photos to locations where they are taken. Such a feature attracts tourists and travellers and differentiates the site from others designed for photographers like Multiply.com. Flickr offers tools like Uploadr and Organizr to make your image uploading and management easier.

A malicious program that sprang up on Facebook.com in late July has surfaced again, this time using Google's Web sites to sneak around security filters. On Tuesday, researchers at unified threat management vendor Fortinet noticed that a program similar to the Koobface worm had started using the Google Reader and Picasa Web sites to spread. In the attack, criminals host images that look like YouTube videos on the Google sites in hopes of tricking victims into downloading malicious Trojan software.
