Photographers are finding it more and more difficult to make a living selling high quality images. There has been a lot of debate as to why photography is being devalued in the workplace. I believe it all comes down to the idea that photography doesn't require skill, training, or talent. There are lots of folks with apparently inborn natural talent for photography that take great images without training. Many more have studied hard on their own to learn photography skills and are virtual wizards with a camera. Others have been trained to create technically good images even if natural talent isn't present. However, there aren't any photographers who take great photos without at least one of these traits.

IconGraphics and photography have been Apple's chasse gardee for years but for quite some time, MS Windows is on par with the Mac and the system of choice for photographers boils down to personal preferences more than anything else. But what about Linux? "My goal with this entry is to brush a big picture of where Linux stands as far as photography is concerned," Joel Cornuz explains, "What are the achievements, where improvements are needed and being worked on, and which pieces are still missing."

In a letter to his brother Theo, the great artist Vincent van Gogh wrote, "It often seems to me that the night is much more alive and richly colored than the day." The advent of digital photography has revolutionized the practice of night photography because a digital sensor can record the spectacular colors of the night. These colors are created by light waves in spectrums that are invisible to the naked human eye. For the first time we can truly "see" the world of the night around us.

Linux definitely needs a credible high quality photo retouching program. Cinepaint has a Ferrari engine inside an old 2CV, while Gimp has the 2CV engine inside a Ferrari. Krita is taking more the direction of a high flying painting program than a photo editor. So this piece is badly needed although being worked on with Cinepaint's next generation (Glasgow) and the integration of GEGL in Gimp.

Essentials 2Now that digital photography has almost completely superseded film, people are finding that they can be much more creative with their pictures utilizing the many software tools available for working with digital images. Perhaps the most popular program for those who are even halfway serious about digital photography is Photoshop Elements. This is a less intimidating and less powerful version of Photoshop--- the gold standard of digital image editing. Photoshop Elements has proved so popular that a few enterprising software companies have devoted resources to making it even more productive. One of the most respected of these is onOne Software, Inc., best known for its highly-respected line of professional photography software. Mike Wong, one of the executives at onOne Software, called to tell me that onOne has just introduced E

I have recently enrolled on a City & Guilds course in photography. The course covers basic digital photography as well as digital darkroom techniques using Photoshop Elements. For the third part of the course I have decided to choose the People module. I do have a keen interest in photography, but I’m unsure as to which camera to get. I originally had in mind either a Canon EOS 400D, EOS 40D or a Nikon D40 or D80. The gentleman in my local camera shop then suggested to me a Pentax K20D. He told me that they were all as good as one another but the Pentax had the anti-shake in the camera, whereas the Canon and the Nikon only have them in the lenses, therefore making the lenses cheaper to buy on the Pentax. I’m looking to spend between £300 to £700.

You're living in cloud-cuckoo-land if you think that digital photography is going to make your photographic life easier. In the old days you would drop off your film at a high street develop and print store, collect your prints one hour later, flick through your 5x7in holiday memories and load another roll of film into the trusty family camera. Nothing could be easier.

No, high speed photography is by no means a new idea; we just very much enjoyed this Flickr collection by user nebarnix. A large gallery of objects frozen in motion with a 500-nanosecond flash, a visual cacophony of exploding eggs and firecrackers captured mid-pop await those who hit the link. Oh, and there's a great shot of a Pabst Blue Ribbon eating a hollow-point bullet:

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- To record "invisible light" has always been an intriguing and fascinating experiment. The infrared part of the light spectrum is outside the range of what the human eye can see but, with a digital camera, we are able to record only this "invisible light" while blocking the "visible" part. The results are often unusual, yet beautiful, renderings of otherwise fairly common scenes, and Digital Infrared Photography (Rocky Nook, $24.95) from Rocky Nook will show you how.

With the accidental discovery of "black silicon," Harvard physicists may have very well changed the digital photography, solar power and night vision industries forever. What is black silicon, you say? Well, it's just as it sounds. Black silicon. It's what this revolutionary new material does that's important, starting with light sensitivity. Early indications show black silicon is 100 to 500 times more sensitive to light than a traditional silicon wafer.
