Phishing Scams Add to Market Woes

Wall Street's upheaval has put consumers at greater risk for phishing scams, a type of fraud in which individuals try to acquire personal information through deception. The share of spam emails that involved phishing scams has hit a high globally, according to U.K.-based Internet security firm Marshal. Bank of America, Citibank and Wachovia, in particular, have been popular Phishing targets.

An introduction to phishing

The term phishing was coined by ‘crackers’ to refer to the act of tricking people into revealing sensitive or private information. It relies on the fact that asking a large number of people for this information, will always fool at least a small number of people. In a phishing attempt, the attacker would typically create a situation where people believe that they are dealing with an authorized party, such as their bank. The attacker will then ask the victim for sensitive information such as credit card information. Much of this activity is automated and the target is typically a large number of Internet users. Therefore phishing is considered an opportunistic attack rather than a targeted one.

Educate your email users about phishing

Last week one of my clients received the resurfaced American Express phishing email. And yesterday an associate told me a dastardly story about being fleeced out of $2,700 from his Citibank account. This was the result of responding to a phishing email. Although email administrators may be more educated and wiser to phishing emails, we must continue to stick to the basics in reiterating and providing ongoing education to our email end users. As mundane and simple as it may be to us, it’s important to stick to the basics.

However, when clicked, the recipient is redirected to a Web site hosted in China that is designed to look like the Google AdWords account home page. “Once again, the social engineering technique used in this campaign is quite sophisticated,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. “The scammers are leveraging the Google brand in the hopes that recipients will trust the sender.
