Cityscope is a new sculpture by Marco Hemmerling, designed to deal "with the fragmented perception of urban spaces" or something: To me, it's better to imagine it as a meteor that just managed to soft-land in a city square. Or, better still than artistic mumbojumbo: perhaps as a particularly odd-looking alien spacecraft. This works even better when you learn its partially-mirrored surfaces disappear at night as it is dynamically multicolor-illuminated from inside. That said, there was a lot of design thought put into this to make it "fit" its space, and the whole thing was CAD-CAM'd into existence. Pretty. [Dezeen]

super-papa sends us to Locus Magazine for an article by Cory Doctorow discussing the conflicts between copyright law and modern culture, and arguing against the perception that copying media is still unusual. Quoting: "Copyright law valorizes copying as a rare and noteworthy event. On the Internet, copying is automatic, massive, instantaneous, free, and constant. Clip a Dilbert cartoon and stick it on your office door and you're not violating copyright. Take a picture of your office door and put it on your homepage so that the same co-workers can see it, and you've violated copyright law, and since copyright law treats copying as such a rarified activity, it assesses penalties that run to the hundreds of thousands of dollars for each act of infringement.

Have you ever wondered why we dance, nod our heads and tap our feet to sounds, but not lights? How the addition of music changes our perception and interpretation of film and television? What areas of the brain are involved in music performance, dance and synchronizing with others? And why children taking music lessons show improvement in language and other cognitive skills? These questions and more were addressed at the fourth annual all-day symposium sponsored by the McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind (MIMM).

LOOK into the night sky at the right time and place and you will catch a flash of sunlight reflected from the International Space Station. The public perception around the world is that this sprawl of modules is basically an American project. In fact, the ISS - perhaps the world's most impressive piece of engineering - is also a product of European industrial and diplomatic expertise, matched in ambition only by the CERN particle accelerator.

Shubigi Rao was not too happy when her husband, a pilot, was asked by his company to relocate to Singapore. Rao did not think that Singapore could offer opportunities for a budding artist like her. Six years later Rao’s perception of Singapore has changed. “If you have new ideas, it’s easy to do it in this country. The arts community is still small so it’s easy to set up a dialogue,” she said.

Companies such as Microsoft, Google and Apple have built not only great products, but also great brands. In this regard, competition in terms of certain products, services, for the same audience or on certain markets has inevitably lead to brand-measuring contests.
