People who still own PDAs in 2008

30% of people in these professions own PDAs, more than twice as many as the national average of 13%. 66% of professionals, managers and executives own laptops, significantly more than employed Americans in any other field of work. The semi-skilled workers can be found on the other side of the gadget ownership spectrum. They are significantly less likely than professionals, clerical workers and managers to own any of the gadgets (13% do not own any type of computer or gadget, including cell phones). Additionally, only 7% of semi-skilled workers own PDAs, compared with 19% of employed Americans who own PDAs. Only 76% of Americans working in semi-skilled trades own cell phones, while 89% of all employed Americans own cell phones, according to Pew Internet Project.

PDAs struggling for a comeback

Way back in the mid-90 s, Palm Pilot entered the vernacular as the generic synonym for personal digital assistants, better known as PDAs. The Pilot name is now long gone, due to legal wranglings with the pen company of the same name, and Palm’s handheld computer devices have since evolved into mobile phones, GPS and camera devices, released mainly under the Treo moniker.

Many companies across a range of industry sectors provide their employees with Blackberry PDAs as remote office tools. Historically, if they also wanted mobile RFID capability they had to invest additionally in more expensive RFID embedded handheld computers. Now, thanks to Tracient Technologies' handheld RFID readers, they can invest in a low cost handheld reader which simply reads RFID tags and collects the data, then transfers it to their Blackberry via Bluetooth. From there it can be processed/ stored in an application on the Blackberry and/or transferred anywhere via the Blackberry's gprs.
