With the advent of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), encrypting stored credit card numbers is no longer optional. Any company that stores, processes, or transmits credit card information —regardless of size or volume of transactions —must encrypt stored credit card data or face serious consequences for non-compliance, including fines of up to $500,000, he loss of brand integrity, and erosion of market value. While the PCI standard offers road guidance —featuring rules on the proper use of firewalls, computer access controls, anti-virus software, and more —it s the encryption requirements that are proving to be among the most difficult or organizations to address. According to a study conducted by Verisign Global Security Consulting Services, failure to address the data encryption requirements of PCI is the most c

The PCI Security Standards Council recently announced the imminent release of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 1.2. arcticstoat writes with an excerpt from Custom PC: "After developing a brand new CPU architecture from the ground-up, you'd expect that Toshiba, Sony and IBM would have more uses for the Cell architecture than the PlayStation 3, and Toshiba has been quick to make use of the architecture's HD video transcoding abilities in its new Qosimo laptops. However, Leadtek is now taking Toshiba's efforts a step further by putting the chip onto a PCI-E card for desktop PCs. The WinFast PxVC1100 is based on Toshiba's SpursEngine SE1000 processor, which is a cut-down version of the Cell chip. The SpursEngine chip features four SPEs (synergistic processing elements) based on 128-bit RISC cores, along with H.264 and MPEG-2 codecs, but it doesn't contain its own CPU as the chip in the PS3 does.

Munich, Germany - One-year follow-up from the much anticipated Synergy Between PCI With Taxus and Cardiac Surgery (SYNTAX) trial indicates that drug-eluting stents (DES) are statistically inferior to CABG, at least for the primary composite end point of all-cause death, cerebrovascular event, MI, and repeat revascularization. But the combined rate of "hard" end points—death, MI, and stroke—were no different between the two trial groups, and secondary-end-point findings, showing a statistically lower risk of stroke among PCI-treated patients and a statistically higher risk of revascularization, will no doubt be interpreted differently by interventionalists and surgeons.

John, you can provide a secure start-up of encryption services in a typical retail POS configuration by implementing the following (very general) best practice for an automated process and for a manual process. Each Local Security (Encryption) Service should be locked upon start-up. While locked, all sensitive data is encrypted and presumably safely stored. During the Local Security Service start-up procedure the application is unlocked so that it can get on with its business processing functions. Unlocking can occur through an automated or manual process – the latter is invoked in situations where the retail WAN connectivity is unavailable for some reason (if WAN connectivity is used). The security of this process depends on the secrecy of the unlock keys, which are unique to each retail site and should only be used once.
