Barence writes "PC Pro has received, benchmarked and discussed the first Intel Atom processor to be seen in the wild. A full analysis of the Atom processor itself is accompanied by a full review of the first PC — yes it's a PC, not a laptop — to use one. The benchmark results are pretty much as expected, but it's the power savings that really excite. And as a rep from the PC maker, Tranquil, joked — they could have left the Atom CPU uncooled if they'd really wanted to prove a point, as it's the old graphics chip that produces 70% of the heat coming from the motherboard. Exciting times ahead for the upcoming Atom-based Eee and friends." MojoKid was one of several readers, too, to mention the upcoming Eee Box mini-desktop from Asus (also Atom-based), which is supposed to start from $299, writing "although the actual dimensions are lis

Vigile writes "Even though PC gaming has a very devout fan-base it is impossible to not see the many benefits that console gaming offers: faster loads, better compatibility and more games that fully utilize the hardware to name a few. AMD just launched a new initiative called AMD GAME! that attempts to bring some of these benefits to PC games as well. AMD will be certifying hardware for two different levels of PC gaming standards, testing compatibility with a host of current and future PC titles as well as offering up AMD GAME! ready components or pre-built systems from partners."

Q&A: At this year's Game Developer's Conference, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia, and a host of other companies involved in selling PC gaming hardware and software announced the PC Gaming Alliance, an organization whose specific purpose is defending the PC as a gaming platform. Its goals include, among other things defining an accurate scope of the PC gaming market, and establishing a hardware baseline for developers to use as a reference point. We spoke with PCGA President Randy Stude (who also works for Intel as the Director of the Gaming Program Office), about these topics and other plans the PCGA has for the future.

Shadow7789 writes "I have been in the market for a new computer for the past few weeks and I know that I want to run Linux on it. However, every time I look at (for example) Dell's computers that are preloaded with Linux, the question pops into my head: 'Why should I buy a PC preloaded with Linux?' They are more expensive, and it's not hard just to reformat the PC with Linux. I hate paying the Microsoft Tax as much as anybody else, but if paying that 'tax' allows companies to reduce my price by bundling with my PC products that I will never use, why wouldn't I just buy a Windows-loaded PC and reformat?"

Automobile glazing is one of the fastest growing market segments for polycarbonate (PC) application. Automotive application is widest in Europe, where moulded PC is used in nearly all auto glazing functions. PC glazing in USA, however, is used in side, rear and roof panels, but not for windshields, where its use has not been approved. Usage of PC in side windows, rear windows and panoramic sunroofs could reduce weight of a car by 50%. PC glazing has a number of advantages compared with glass:

How much will Asus' Eee PC 1000 set you back once it hits retail stores in the United States? Hard to say. Asus hasn't announced official pricing, but we can get a rough idea by checking Taiwanese online retailer PC Home, which has added a listing for the Eee PC 1000 to its website.

Today we are checking out the recently released Mass Effect PC game. Mass Effect is an immensely fun and deep game that virtually all PC gamers will find something to like in. You could literally write a book about Mass Effect giving away plot details as you go along. If you are a fan of sci-fi role playing or shooter games you simply must add Mass Effect to your library. Mass Effect is simply one of the best PC games I have ever played.

Were this review based on design and features alone the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC would be walking away with a Recommended Award: that's a fact. It has a superb keyboard and a chassis that's a cut above both the Eee PC and anything we've seen, released or otherwise. Unfortunately for HP there's a lot more to it than this and the Mini-Note struggles to match even the modest exploits of the Eee PC. Its 1.2GHz VIA CPU chugs when shown any kind of video and battery life is poor, managing even less than the none too impressive longevity offered by Asus' machine. If and when HP updates this with something faster, be it Intel's Atom or a new generation VIA CPU, then it could be onto a real winner.

A couple of days ago Valve released the results of their Steam hardware survey, which collects data on the computers of more than 1.7 million Steam users who opted-in (don’t worry, Valve isn’t spying on you unless you give permission). This isn’t the end-all-be-all of PC gaming statistics, but it’s an excellent sample of the hardware we game on.

The top board is a complete PC from Intelec Technologies. The bottom one could be a data acquisition board or any other peripheral not part of the primary PC. The pin layouts on a PC/104 board's perimeter depend on its function, and there are a lot of I/O connections required in this example. However, the stacking pins and sockets are common to all PC/104 boards for connecting them through the ISA bus.

Even using the "downgrade to XP" option still requires the purchase of a Vista license from Microsoft, so PC World recons that especially small businesses will be much better served simply moving to Linux instead.

Recently, we had a story about a lawyer who was suing a bunch of folks for uploading a pinball video game, with some questionable statements about how piracy was destroying the PC gaming industry. Of course, that's not actually true. An excellent post by Cord Blomquist explains how the PC gaming business is actually growing, but in different ways than most people expect. Sure, it may be harder to find certain types of video games that you see on consoles these days, but other games are thriving. But they're doing so by adopting different business models that aren't so impacted by unauthorized distribution. For example, they involve online services (ongoing MMO type games, where the payment is for service, rather than the software) or they focus on making money through other means, such as advertising or upselling premium editions.
