Roland Piquepaille writes "According to the Optical Society of America, U.S. researchers have been able to create a practical optical fiber with a silicon core. As they were able to use the same commercial methods that are used to develop all-glass fibers, this might pave the way for future silicon fibers as viable alternatives to glass fibers. The scientists note that this should help increase efficiency and decrease power consumption in computers and other systems that integrate photonic and electronic devices. Here is a good summary by the lead researcher: 'In the past, we've needed one structure to process light and another to carry it. With a silicon fiber, for the first time, we have the ability to greatly enhance the functionality in one fiber.

Scientists in the US have developed a single nanotube field effect array that can detect live, intact breast cancer cells with single-cell selectivity in a drop of fresh human blood. The nanotubes are airbrushed onto a 1 cm × 1 cm chip, which can be configured to provide multiple cell recognition and could pave the way for fast-acting, low-cost hand-held oncometers.

The Huygens probe, currently in the orbit of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, has managed to send back enough data for specialists to work with. Although not everything went as expected, upon a thorough analysis, they were able to infer that the atmosphere of Titan shows signs of natural electric activity. As proven by previous experiments, electricity is the spark of life, transforming inorganic compounds into organic, prebiotic molecules, which could pave the way for life to emerge at some point.

Some 2,000 scientists worldwide have been working at this census of all marine interactions for the last decade, in an attempt to offer the international scientific community and the general public a thorough insight into how animals and plants interact in the marine ecosystems. The city of Valencia, in Spain, will host the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity, between the 11th and the 15th of November, where some 500 scientists will pave the way for the publishing of the census.

Softbank's just stumped-up with this interesting mobile TV add-on for Japanese iPhone users: it's a separate unit with tuner and aerial that retransmits the signal over Wi-fi to the phone. The rechargeable device will give about three hours of TV oggling, and connects to a special iPhone app that'll be distributed free when the device hits the streets in mid December for a suggested price of around $100. Better still, the receiver unit doubles as an iPhone battery top-up when you link it via the dock connector, for double the utility. And just maybe it'll pave the way for similar non-1seg devices this side of the Pacific. [AVWatch]
