Google Sends Out Android Security Patch

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has started sending out a patch for its Android operating system to fix a security problem with the browser, and addressed a few other minor changes, CNet reports. The patch is going out on various days, with CNet reporting that they received notification on Saturday. I received the patch for my T-Mobile G1 on Sunday. The update went smoothly. A short message appeared saying an update was available, and then I had the choice of updating now or later. I clicked now, and it happened over a matter of minutes, and then the phone worked normally. The patch comes only about a week after a couple of researchers revealed the flaw on Oct. 24, showing that Google is being responsive to concerns.

Microsoft to Issue Emergency Patch For File-Sharing Hole

An anonymous reader writes "Microsoft said late Wednesday that it plans to release a critical security update today to plug a security hole present in all supported versions of Windows. The company hasn't released any details about the patch yet, which is expected to be pushed out at 1 p.m. PT. Normally, Redmond issues security updates on Patch Tuesday, the second Tuesday of each month. The Washington Post's Security Fix blog notes that each of the three times in the past that Microsoft has departed from its patch cycle, it was to fix some really nasty vulnerability that criminals already were exploiting to break into Windows PCs." Reader filenavigator points out an article which describes the hole as an SMB vulnerability, and says it "allows anyone to access a Windows machine remotely without any user name or password.

Microsoft's "Dead Cow" Patch Was 7 Years In the Making

narramissic writes "Back in March 2001, a hacker named Josh Buchbinder (a.k.a Sir Dystic) published code showing how an attack on a flaw in Microsoft's SMB (Server Message Block) service worked. Or maybe the flaw was first disclosed at Defcon 2000, by Veracode Chief Scientist Christien Rioux (a.k.a. Dildog). It was so long ago, memory is dim. Either way, it has taken Microsoft an unusually long time to fix. Now, a mere seven and a half years later, Microsoft has released a patch. 'I've been holding my breath since 2001 for this patch,' said Shavlik Technologies CTO Eric Schultze, in an e-mailed statement. Buchbinder's attack, called a SMB relay attack, 'showed how easy it was to take control of a remote machine without knowing the password,' he said.

Worm Risk Spurs Critical Microsoft Patch

A scary security flaw that would allow malicious worms to infect one PC and then automatically jump to others prompted Microsoft to release a rare out-of-cycle patch in October. The glitch is critical for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, and for Windows Server 2000. Microsoft says that targeted attacks exploited the hole prior to the patch's release, and that "detailed exploit code" is currently available online.

e1000e Bug Squashed — Linux Kernel Patch Released

ruphus13 writes "As mentioned earlier, there was a kernel bug in the alpha/beta version of the Linux kernel (up to 2.6.27 rc7), which was corrupting (and rendering useless) the EEPROM/NVM of adapters. Thankfully, a patch is now out that prevents writing to the EEPROM once the driver is loaded, and this follows a patch released by Intel earlier in the week. From the article: 'The Intel team is currently working on narrowing down the details of how and why these chipsets were affected. They also plan on releasing patches shortly to restore the EEPROM on any adapters that have been affected, via saved images using ethtool -e or from identical systems.' This is good news as we move towards a production release!"

Patch Woes, LHC Goes, IC Glows

Ordinarily, after the heads-up on what's due in Microsoft's monthly Patch Tuesday there's not much more to say when the patches are released. Alas, this month isn't ordinary. Also on the extraordinary list is the Large Hadron Collider, which was tested Wednesday and may one day unlock secrets of the universe and how it came to be (provided we don't all get sucked into a black hole as some naysayers fear). More cause for celebration came with this week's marking of the 50th anniversary of the integrated circuit.
