Sanyo is switching to Sharp LCD panels for its HDTV sets, the former company has announced. While Sanyo is well-known as a brand in general, its TVs have not been able to compete against the likes of those from Samsung and Sony. The Japanese electronics market has been consolidating as whole, and has forced the adoption of strategies similar to Sanyo's on the part of companies like Pioneer. In Sanyo's case its consumer electronics division has done poorly, and Reuters notes that on Thursday, the corporation announced its first profits in four years.

Sanyo Electric announced on Friday that it has started buying liquid crystal display (LCD) panels from Sharp for use in its flat-screen TVs sold in North America. "We hope to expand our business by having a mutually complementary relationship with Sharp," said Sanyo spokeswoman Yuko Hosaka. "Sharp's strength in LCDs is part of that." The company started ordering LCDs from Sharp in April, but will also continue procurement from other suppliers. This move comes as Sharp, the world's third-largest LCD TV maker, expands attempts to secure a stable source of demand for its LCD panels from rival TV set makers as it aggressively invests in expanding output.

TihSon writes "I'm building a large shed out back and I want to power the lighting using a surplus solar panel. In searching for information on how to go about this, I have found a lot of rough DIY guides for various projects that are close to my goal. But none seem to explain the reasoning and theory behind using solar panels, so hacking their project to suit my own needs could be pretty much hit-and-miss. I don't want to do a hacked-up job, and future solar projects are not out of the question, so something a bit more in-depth is required. Do you have suggestions for books or Web sites you have used to learn the ins and outs of using solar panels? Something that starts with basic theory and ends with the ability to wire a house would be perfect.
