Pakistan cricket signs 140.5 million dollar TV deal

LAHORE, Pakistan, Nov 23, (AFP): Pakistan cricket officials on Sunday signed a five-year, $140.5 million television rights deal with the Gulf-based Taj Entertainment Network, the cricket board said. The deal, described as “excellent” by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief operating officer Salim Altaf, allayed fears that broadcasters might bid less for Pakistani cricket because foreign teams have been refusing to tour the country over security concerns. “It is an excellent deal which will run from 2009 to 2013 for a period of five years and will start from our home series against India,” Altaf told AFP. The Taj Entertainment Network, which operates TEN Sports and is owned by Gulf-based businessman Abdulrahman Bukhatir, also held Pakistan cricket broadcast rights from 2004 to 2008.

ABU DHABI, Nov 12, (Agencies): Kamran Akmal hit two sixes in paceman Jerome Taylor’s last over to help Pakistan beat the West Indies by four wickets in a dramatic finish to the first day-night international here on Wednesday. Chasing a daunting 295, Pakistan needed a tough 17 off the 50th over, but Akmal hit the second and third ball for sixes to give his team an unexpected win with a nine-ball 24 not out to overshadow Chris Gayle’s brilliant century. Gayle notched a 106-ball 113 to power his team to a challenging 294-9 in their 50 overs. Paceman Lionel Baker (3-47) nearly derailed Pakistan before Akmal and Fawad Alam (26 not out) changed the script.

PCB sticks to hosting India cricket series in Pakistan

ABU DHABI: Pakistan cricket officials Saturday termed shifting of their home series against India to neutral venues as “mere speculation”, saying preparations are at full swing in their country. India is scheduled to tour Pakistan in January-February to play a side game, three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 but the tour is already in doubt over the security situation in the host country. But Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief operating officer Salim Altaf voiced confidence the series would go ahead as per the schedule. “We have not heard anything from the Indian Board and until we hear something contrary, Indian team will play the first match on the 9th January in Hyderabad and the first Test starts on the 13th in Karachi,” Altaf told reporters.

Abu Dhabi is ready to host an India-Pakistan series after its drive to attract high-profile sporting events brought it the final race in next year's Formula One championship, an official said Thursday. India is scheduled to tour Pakistan early next year but the tour is already in doubt over security fears in the host country, raising the prospect of the series being played at a neutral venue such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dilawar Mani, the president of Abu Dhabi Cricket Club (ADCC), said the Emirates would be more than willing to host the India-Pakistan series if they were asked.

KARACHI (December 02 2008): Former great Wasim Akram Monday called on India not to break cricketing ties with Pakistan, suggesting both countries should instead play a Test match in terrorist-hit Mumbai to show solidarity. The Pakistan Cricket Board has sacked the national cricket team’s coach Geoff Lawson here on Friday. The former Australian pace-man had assumed the position of coach just 15 months before, the board's spokesman said. "Geoff Lawson has been sacked. He has been given three months' severance pay," PCB spokesman Raza Rashid told media. The move comes just three days after new PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said that Lawson's contract would not be renewed next year, on the grounds that Pakistan had "no utility" for him. The 50-year-old Lawson was appointed Pakistan coach in July last year after Pakistan's first-round defeat in the World Cup in the Caribbean in March.
