pages: search
It can be somewhat difficult to find effective ways to protect pages and images on websites. Many beginning designers like to hide their pages and think that if they don't link to the pages, they won't be found by search engines or competitors. But search engine spiders are very good at finding things on Web pages unless you either block the spiders from indexing it with a robots.txt file or you prevent access to it with an htaccess file or other password protection scheme.

It's not often that a Google service comes this low down in a comparison test. However, it's not because Google Pages is particularly bad, just that the competition is so much better. Page creation is straightforward but linking pages into sites is laborious, as there's no automatic-navigation creation to help you out. The ability to paste in Google Gadgets is nice, though, not least because of the enormous variety on offer.

Search engines such as Google collect pages from across the web allowing us to search the content of those pages. This is great if we are searching for a person and their name can be found on a static web page. Unfortunately, standard search engines are unable to tap into the vast quantities of information on people located in online databases. For example, you won’t find White Pages listings using a Google Search. All this information untapped by search engines makes up the Deep Web.

We have a pair of websites on two separate domains, one English and one French. Google is crawling regularly, but indexing pages that do not exist. For example, on the English site, Google has indexed a page with the following title: Restaurant G%252525252525u00e9rant%2525252525252fe resto rapide ... The %252525252525u00e9 is a single accented French character from the equivalent french page on the other domain. This same character problem shows up also in the URL for the page.
