In one implementation, pressing a Page Down or Page Up keyboard key/button allows a user to begin at any starting vertical location within a page, and navigate to that same location on the next or previous page. For example, if a user is viewing a page starting in a viewing area from the middle of that page and ending at the bottom, a Page Down command will cause the next page to be shown in the viewing area starting at the middle of the next page and ending at the bottom of the next page.

To think that prior to 2005 there wasn't any page up / page down functionality. After all, that's when Microsoft filed a patent application for "Method and system for navigating paginated content in page-based increments."

I am experiencing problem with two websites in which the home page is index.asp. The page opens fine in IE. But in Mozilla Firefox the picture is extended and some of the asp code in drop down also displays. I checked out in another website which is also in ASP. There is problem with home page and there too asp code is displayed. Problem only with Firefox. I tried renaming it differently and did some minor changes. If I rename to someother name and upload it, the same page works fine. But when I make it home page the problem comes again. Does anybody else have this issue?

"Most Web applications take user data, translate it into a form storable in a database, and then take that database data and translate it into a Web page. When creating a Web page from data, one approach is to create a single PHP page that acts as a template for the Web page, which contains all of the database queries and other logic necessary to restructure the data into a form usable by the page. One problem with this approach, however, is that it mixes concerns together:

Are you kidding me? Google getting rid of Google Page Creator, this must be a joke. No, it's for real. Google says they're going to be transitioning all Google Page Creator websites into their new Google Sites. Excuse me, but Google Sites doesn't come close to being as good as Google Page Creator. Why in the world would Google choose to keep the lesser of the two?

In the past, web applications were limited because a web page had to be reloaded (or another page loaded in its place) in order for new data to be obtained. Other methods were available (without loading another page), but the techniques weren’t well supported and had a tendency to be buggy. In recent months, a technique that had not been widely supported in the past has become available to a large number of web surfers, giving developers more freedom to develop cutting-edge web applications. These applications, which asynchronously retrieve XML data via JavaScript, are affectionately known as “Ajax applications” (Asynchronous Javascript and XML applications). In this article, I will explain how to retrieve a remote XML file via Ajax to update a web page, and as this series continues, I will discuss more ways that Ajax technology can be us

An anonymous reader notes that Microsoft has been granted a patent on "Page Up" and "Page Down" keystrokes. The article links an image of an IBM PC keyboard from 1981 with such keys in evidence. "The software giant applied for the patent in 2005, and was granted it on August 19, 2008. US patent number 7,415,666 describes 'a method and system in a document viewer for scrolling a substantially exact increment in a document, such as one page, regardless of whether the zoom is such that some, all or one page is currently being viewed.'... The company received its 5,000th patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office in March 2006, and is currently approaching the 10,000 mark."

eBay is rolling out a new View Item page, and, as previously announced, sellers with items listed for sale on the site are able to preview the new design by signing in and clicking the preview link at the top of their listings. eBay released a screenshot of the newly designed page in June, but announced in August it was making changes based on feedback it heard at the eBay Live conference.

Earlier this month eBay rolled out a new version of its eBay Pulse portal that shows popular products and searches. New modules display the most popular searches in each of eBay's main categories, as well as the biggest movers. But after receiving feedback that users wanted to view the data in subcategories as provided by the old version, eBay said it would update the Pulse page and re-launch the portal early next year. In the meantime, users can now access the new portal page and the former version.

When I turn on my computer, Windows Live Messanger is signed on. I never use this tool to IM. Now I cannot get more than one IE page to open at one time. When I already have one page open and I try to open another I get the response that the IE page is not responding, and that it is sending Microsoft an error message. I have logged off and shut down about seven times in a row. I evidently do not have a normal router either. I need to know how to go into my computer and check my router to see if it is sending out signals. And I need to check the security of my computer. How would I know how to tell whether I am just having problems with the computer, or if someone has hacked into my computer. Any help would be appreciated. Misseltoile

When it comes to ecommerce sites, there are plenty of keywords to choose from. Because sites typically follow a fairly set format, numerous pages are created between the home page and the order confirmation page. Those pages all need keywords and phrases if they are going to rank high in the search engines. So, how exactly do you choose the best keywords for each page? Here's an easy strategy to follow. (Please keep in mind that all keyphrases used in this article are for example only and have not been researched.)

As a Mac user who used to use Windows exclusively, the idea of a BSoD (Blue screen of death) was terrifying and is now hilarious to me. Thus, when I found this how to that makes your 404 page look like a BSoD, I couldn't resist it. Granted, creating a useful 404 page is better for your readers, but this page is hysterical.

eBay announced that, starting this week, it will display only one identical item from the same seller in Search results, and will limit the number of unique listings for different items per seller to ten per page. In a case where a seller has a number of items - for instance 20 - that could potentially show up in the same search results, 10 will be shown on the first page, and the other 10 will be shown on the second page.

I got a new iPod touch a week or so ago, and have been browsing to many of my favorite sites with it. One thing that a lot of sites do is detect that I'm on a mobile device (and sometimes specifically an iPhone or iPod Touch) and send me to the mobile version of the page. At first, I really liked this, as it made the pages easier to read without zooming. But what I quickly realized is that many sites provide a crippled version of their pages to mobile users. For instance, Twitter doesn't seem to provide a way to follow someone when you view their page in mobile mode (if they do, I couldn't find it) (update: when I viewed the mobile page in my full-screen monitor, I found the follow link, I wonder why I can't find it in the mobile browser) and Gizmodo only shows the top three articles and summaries rather than the full content.
