Anyone who says their business "runs itself" probably owes a great debt of gratitude to a small army of software applications and Web services that tirelessly feeds the machine from behind the scenes. From creating and storing documents and staying on top of e-mail to keeping the books and getting teams working together, it takes a lot of code to run a business, or at least to run it well. But setting up your company isn't as easy as just fishing apps out of a barrel. You want the best you can get, and at a price that isn't through the roof.

While video games have long taken inspiration from movies—every World War II first-person shooter, for example, owes a debt to “Saving Private Ryan”—few have been so deeply inspired by cinema as “Dead Space.”

Viking: Battle For Asgard is the latest game from Creative Assembly (creators of the award-winning Total War series), that takes place amongst the Norse gods. From the opening bars of Viking: Battle for Asgard we are on a musical journey that owes a lot to Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Melodic ideas waft through the large orchestral texture with choral backgrounds that reflect a former mythological age. Flute ideas create a sense of ancient Northern Europe and appear to hint at folk scenes. But for the most part there is a lot of menace in this music that helps to increase tension in the gaming experience. There are some interesting percussion-laced macabre moments that are quite chilling. Action sequences, of which there are plenty, are what makes this score an exciting listening experience.

blake182 writes "CNET reports that PGP, together with IBM and other technology firms, is mounting a fundraising effort to benefit the ailing Bletchley Park, home of the Station X codebreaking efforts in World War II. 'We're calling attention (to the fact that) Bletchley is falling into disrepair, and that, probably, the world owes a debt of gratitude to that place,' said Phil Dunkelberger, chief executive of PGP."

This news came out last week, but I've been out of town and now want to offer congratulations to the Bad Astronomer Phil Plait who is adding one more item to his long list of credientials and accomplishments. Phil will now be taking on the role of President….. of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF). If you're not familiar with JREF, (you should be!), the goals of the Foundation are to bring critical thinking to the public, expose pseudoscientific frauds, and promote real science and rationality. If you've been reading Phil's Bad Astronomy blog, you know that those are his goals as well, so this new role seems like a perfect fit for both Phil and JREF. Phil says he owes everything to Randi: "He opened my eyes – and my brain – to the idea that reality is a better place to live in than fantasy.
