PSP Update: It's Dominating Japan

Remember the post we had late last year pondering how the PSP could overtake the DS (and the companion piece pondering why it wouldn't)? Well, it's done just that for the first six months of 2008. Famitsu's publisher claims that the PSP has sold 1.9 million units in Japan so far this year, leading the Wii with 1.7 million and the DS with 1.6 million. This is partially due to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which is a Japan-only RPG that has been moving PSPs like cakes that have been heated somehow. Will Sony be able to keep up the momentum, or will Nintendo be able to churn out a few more Pokemon and Mario titles to reclaim the lead? [Mainichi via PSPhyper via Kotaku]

Shipwrecks on coral reefs harbor unwanted species

Shipwrecks on coral reefs may increase invasion of unwanted species, according to a recent US Geological Survey study published in the open-access journal PLoS ONE. These unwanted species can completely overtake the reef and eliminate all the native coral, dramatically decreasing the diversity of marine organisms on the reef. This study documents for the first time that a rapid change in the dominant biota on a coral reef is unambiguously associated with man-made structures.

Cuil Trots Out Dark Horse Search Contender

On the surface, the new search engine Cuil appears to be the anti-Google -- it's got a black background and greets visitors with an unequivocal promise of privacy. But if Cuil expects to overtake Google, it's probably in for a tough fight. Google is about much more than search these days, and its whole system is designed to keep users inside its family of products.

The Domain Blast

ICANN's move to open up the process of assigning top-level domain names creates a potential flood of activity and confusion that will leave even established players behind if they don't act quickly. Without the limitations on domain naming, writes columnist Naseem Javed, creative domain namers could overtake the Web.

Will the new Rhapsody pose a threat to iTunes?

I’ve long said there was little interest in subscription music services, and the folks at Rhapsody apparently agree with the launch of the “Music Without Limits” initiative. Since the initiative is iPod-compatible, I think it will offer some decent competition for iTunes (though I don’t think there’s a chance it will overtake the Apple online store).

China Likely to Win More Medals Than in Years Past

A study earlier this year found that a country's population and income can predict how many Olympic medals it will win, and calculated that China can expect to take home 14 percent more prizes this year than it did in the last summer games in 2004. Though the researchers forecast a big jump for China, they do not predict it will be enough to overtake the United States, which has won the most medals in recent years.
