While Overspill by Ali Taylor is brimful to bursting with larky stylistic invention, it strikes me as a prime example of how the modish requirement to be playful - and ostentatiously experimental - among young writers today can drown serious themes under a riptide of self-conscious theatricality.

It has been almost a year since Icelandic student Thorarinn Jonsson, 25, caused panic and outrage when he placed a fake bomb outside the Royal Ontario Museum for an art project. Police had to evacuate the museum, and a nearby AIDS benefit was cancelled. The former Ontario College of Art and Design student pleaded guilty to mischief in September and was discharged and placed on probation for nine months. He has since returned to Iceland, where he's completing his studies. In his first interview since the conclusion of his case, he speaks with the Post's Natalie Alcoba about what happened.
