RobotsDinner writes "In what sounds like a dystopian sci-fi plot, the Home Office has made public plans to outfit the country's Internet with upstream data recorders to log pretty much everything that passes through. 'Under Government plans to monitor internet traffic, raw data would be collected and stored by the black boxes before being transferred to a giant central database. The vision was outlined at a meeting between officials from the Home Office and Internet Service Providers earlier this week.'"

Nokia Siemens Networks has outlined plans for further job cuts as part of the integration of the Nokia and Siemens network equipment businesses. When the merger was first announced, the company announced plans to cut 10-15 percent of its global workforce, or around 9,000 positions. To date, the group has shed 6,000 employees. It has now started consultations with employee representatives on the remaining reductions, mainly in Finland and Germany. NEW YORK, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Sprint Nextel Corp said on Thursday it would keep its customer-losing iDen network and plans to rejuvenate the division, which it bought from Nextel Communications in 2005. Sprint said that early next year it would create a nationwide unlimited calling plan with one monthly fee for its youth-focused Boost mobile service, which uses the iDen network, which supports walkie-talkie services as well as more traditional cell phone calls. The No. 3 U.S. mobile service said in the summer it was reviewing its options for the business, but while the network had attracted 'significant interest' this had waned as the U.S. financial crisis deepened. Chief Executive Dan Hesse told Reuters recently that any potential bidders may face financing problems in the tightened credit markets.
