Brevity and quality are the only things the 16 films in this collection have in common. Some are first efforts or early attempts, others are experiments, others still are simply stories too short to demand feature length. There are no set rules here, but it's a useful primer on world cinema. While you might be familiar with plenty of the names involved - Guillermo Del Toro, Park Chan-Wook, Andrea Arnold, Alfonso Cuarón, Alexander Sokurov - chances are, even completists and fans haven't seen all of these. Some directors show their style developing early - such as Jane Campion's A Girl's Own Story and Sylvain "Belleville Rendez-Vous" Chomet's The Old Lady And The Pigeons - others are seen tackling subjects outside of what they're known for - Del Toro's awesome Dona Lupe has little supernatural about it.

Internet usage is now all the rage for people to engage in communication with one another. Although people use email, instant messenger and chat, others have begun to create a type of online diary that gives others the chance to both read and comment on the writings. Blogs have become ever more fashionable, being authored by celebrities of stage and screen as well as various places of business. But our first question remain, what is a blog?

The latest Hollywood reworking of a successful European movie (another sad indication that Middle America can no longer respond to challenges and terrors visited on others) transposes a horrific night in Barcelona to an even nastier one in Los Angeles. A perky TV reporter embarks on a documentary about life at a fire station. A quiet night is interrupted by a seemingly routine call-out that involves the reporter, her photographer, the firefighters, the cops and others in a claustrophobic encounter with bloodsucking zombies in an old apartment block. The original film [Rec] is followed closely and it too observed the events solely from the camera eye. But there's much added gore and it's altogether less individual.

Ten years ago this week, President Clinton (remember him?) signed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act into law. Ostensibly passed to bring US copyright law in line with World Intellectual Property Organization treaties, the law has had a variety of effects, some good, others obviously not. If there has been any unambiguous impact of the law, it has been that it has provided a whole new venue for companies to file frivolous lawsuits that attempt to deny others the chance to communicate or engage in business.

Q I drive about 150 miles a day and have noticed an increase in people not adhering to the hands-free cell phone law. I was behind someone one day who had the phone to his ear for over 20 miles. While following him, I passed at least 10 others with phones pasted to their ears. Maybe the penalties need to be stiffer or it should be a moving violation. What have others seen?

Suicide streamed online draws legal scrutiny: Will there be legal action over the suicide of a 19-year-old who streamed his death on Justin.TV while some viewers tried to egg him on after he posted his plans on bodybuilding.com and others tried to save him? Civil lawsuits wouldn’t be surprising but criminal charges are far less likely, even though the definition of “manslaughter” in Florida seems to leave ample room. Police in South Florida are looking at the moderator’s role on Justin.TV and comments on a forum at the bodybuilding site, according to NewsFactor and others. The forum moderator contacted police, who found Abraham Briggs dead nearly 12 hours after he announced his plans online. CNET News has some legal opinions.

Marco Folio posted a list of the most popular Design blogs out there and these are definitely some of the best of the best. If you're not reading these sites, you should reconsider. Sites like Smashing Magazine, PSDTuts, and CSS-Tricks are all blogs that I read nearly every day. And the others on this list are just as spectacular. I'm honestly surprised that some of my favorite Web design sites didn't make it on the list like MezzoBlue, A List Apart, and Vitamin and others on my Blogroll. But perhaps they aren't considered blogs.

An anonymous reader writes "As a sequel to their Is Ubuntu Getting Slower? Phoronix now has out an article that compares the performance of Ubuntu 8.10 to Apple's Mac OS X 10.5.5. They tested both the x86 and x86_64 spins of Ubuntu and threw at both operating systems a number of graphics, disk, computational, and Java benchmarks, among others. With the Mac Mini used in some of the comparisons, 'Leopard' was faster, while in others it was a tight battle."

Michael J. Ross writes "As Internet users' expectations continue to ratchet upwards, it is increasingly essential that every Web site owner maximize the chances that those users will find the site in question, and, once found, that the site will perform well enough that those visitors become customers or members, and recommend the site to others. Key elements of a successful strategy include optimization for search engines, pay-per-click advertising, and visitor conversion, as well as responsive Web pages and fine-tuning of all the above, using various metrics. These topics and others are explored in Website Optimization: Speed, Search Engine & Conversion Rate Secrets by Andrew B. King." Keep reading for the rest of Michael's review.
