As part of the latest round in the $1 billion copyright fight between Viacom and YouTube, a federal judge has ordered the popular online video-sharing service to disclose consumer records. Seemingly violating the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA), the judge has ordered YouTube to disclose precisely what videos consumers watched, and when -- though the 12 terabyte data dump would include "less specific identifiers than a user's real name or e-mail address," according to the Associated Press. I'm guessing that eight terabytes of that data will be "Rick Rolling".

(Nanowerk Spotlight) The use of spontaneous self-assembly as a lithography- and external field-free means to construct well-ordered, often intriguing structures has received much attention for its ease of organizing materials on the nanoscale into ordered structures and producing complex, large-scale structures with small feature sizes. These self-organized structures promise new opportunities for developing miniaturized optical, electronic, optoelectronic, and magnetic devices.

I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "Why would UMG, one of the four major RIAA members, consider an infringement award 'grossly excessive'? Naturally, because they were the ones ordered to pay it. While they had no trouble with Jammie Thomas being ordered to pay $222k, some 13,214 times the actual costs, they thought that being ordered to pay ten times the actual damages in Bridgeport v. Justin Combs was just too much. Then again, maybe that's why they didn't complain back when the increased statutory damages section was cut from the PRO-IP Act? Now if they could just cut the rest of the act."
