Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have taken the first visible-light snapshot of a planet orbiting another star. The images show the planet, named Fomalhaut b, as a tiny point source of light orbiting the nearby, bright southern star Fomalhaut, located 25 light-years away in the constellation Piscis Australis. An immense debris disk about 21.5 billion miles across surrounds the star. Fomalhaut b is orbiting 1.8 billion miles inside the disk's sharp inner edge.

A team of astronomers from Penn State and Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland has discovered a new planet that is closely orbiting a red-giant star, HD 102272, which is much older than our own Sun. The planet has a mass that is nearly six times that of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. The team includes Alexander Wolszczan, the discoverer of the first planets ever found outside our solar system, who is an Evan Pugh Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics and the director of the Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds at Penn State; and Andrzej Niedzielski, who leads his collaborators in Poland. The team suspects that a second planet may be orbiting HD 102272, as well. The findings, which will be published in a future issue of The Astrophysical Journal, shed light on the ways in which aging stars can influence nearby

This is rather significant. Here are two articles that were just posted today describing how researchers searching for planets orbiting stars other than our own sun have directly photographed such planets (up until now, the best we could do was to infer their presence based on the effects they had on their parent stars, such as making the stars "wobble" or varying their brightness when the planet passed in front of the star).

In an unprecedented discovery, a team of Canadian, U.S. and British astronomers have used telescopes atop the summit of a dormant Hawaiian volcano to capture images of three giant planets orbiting a star known as HR 8799. Comparisons of images obtained in different years show that the three planets, each roughly ten times the mass of Jupiter, are all moving with and orbiting around the star, proving that they are associated with it and are part of a solar system.

Happy Birthday, International Space Station. Ten years ago, on Nov. 20, 1998, a Russian rocket launched the functional cargo block, the first piece of the station, into space. Since then, this mostly complete orbiting laboratory has been the site of research into subjects such as the effects of weightlessness on humans and animals, but it has also seen its share of mishaps. That's only natural—keeping an orbiting space station constantly operational and inhabited is a laborious task filled with pitfalls, and the ISS's direct predecessor, Russia's Mir, became notorious for its technical difficulties. Here are some of the headaches, mishaps and near-misses the ISS has had to confront in its 10 years of existence.
