Barcelona, Spain-based Tuxbrain has released an application-rich Linux distribution for the Openmoko Neo FreeRunner phone called Fat and Dirty OpenMoko (FDOM). In addition, Openmoko announced that both Tuxbrain and French design firm FaberNovel have joined the company's network of more than 20 distributors.

OpenMoko's recently mentioned Android phone is effectively the company's Neo FreeRunner with a different operating system, the company has confirmed. Instead of a custom-built but basic Linux distribution, the GTA02 uses Google's Android to both give it a native touchscreen interface and access to all the features of the phone, including its 3D-capable ARM processor, assisted GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 and GPRS data.

OpenMoko, stalwarts of the open source gadget movement, have announced their intentions to develop an Android-compatible handset for release as early as November. According to AndroidGuys, the alleged Android phone will operate under the project name "GTA02" and resemble something like the Neo FreeRunner. The phone is said to have a 2.8-inch, 640x480 screen, Wi-Fi, 3 axis accelerometer, 400-500 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, 256 MB NAND Flash, A-GPS and a "laser pen."

Koolu have announced that they are to start optimizing as well as supporting the Google Android platform on FreeRunner, the Openmoko’s Free and Open Source-based mobile phone. There is now a beta version of Koolu for Android, and should be available for download in the first week of December.

Toronto, Ontario-based Koolu announced that it will release a version of Google's Linux/Java Android stack optimized for Openmoko's Neo FreeRunner Linux phone. A beta of "Android for FreeRunner" is due the first week of December, says Koolu, which will also sell the FreeRunner loaded with Android.

HTC had better look out. Motorola also has chosen Android to be its savior. But these are not the only companies looking at the open mobile platform from Google. OpenMoko, maker of the Linux-based FreeRunner, also is eying Android, as is Asus (yes, the maker of PCs). Can Android take over the mobile world?
